During my Norwich City side's triumphant championship-winning season i ended up in the 6th round of the FA Cup away to Everton, with a key top of the title clash at Southampton some 3 days later. My players were knackered however, so, after much deliberation and for the first time ever in FM, i fielded a bunch of kids in order to lose. They did, and my refreshed team beat Saints 2-0.
I was wondering if anyone had other tales of skullduggery and self-sabotage that were more costly?
I got Hull City into the League Cup final. I was only about 4 points clear of relegation when game day arrived. I won that 1-0 on an almost-last-minute goal. On the following Wednesday, I had an away game against Chelski, followed by a big, big away game at current #18, Portsmouth, on the following Saturday. I figured that since my chances to get points from Stamford Bridge were just about nil anyway, I might as well take a good beating there and field a rested best-11 against Portsmouth.
It worked. Thanks to a fluke goal and the heroics of my back-up goalkeeper, I lost to Chelsea 'only' by 1-3, and the top-11 had a great game against Pompey winning 2-0.
I remember throwing a match in FM2007 to help a club avoid relegation, as i already had the title wrapped up, but i can't remember what the club was. They stayed up by 1 point on the last day.
I've definitely played what I would call a "worse set of players", but I've never deliberately "thrown" a match. OK, I wouldn't expect to win with my reserves, but I've never taken the 'keeper out of goal or something like that!

I thought his name was spelt Dillon... Not that I know, I never watched that poo. BLEGH! BLEGH! *spits*
Apart from that, I did see someone on here a couple of days ago deliberately lose 15-0 or something against Sunderland Reserves, just to pay them back, because he beat their first team 4-1 and won the Premiership. Something like that anyway.
My friend at work has declared he once threw a match against Cardiff so they would win the title and not Man U. He claims he did it just to see 'Cardiff' in the list of past winners of the premiership.

i 'threw' a match against palermo to keep ac milan out of the champions league. they beat me twice that season, so it was revenge.
That sounds like the official version. Does the unofficial version include an offer you can't refuse?
