Tactics & Training Tips

It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

I have enjoyed all the previous Football manager games but in this one I feel they have got it wrong. The pleasure from the game was making a poor or average team better through building a team with new players and developing youth players. Especially starting in the lower leagues and bringing through young unknown players who progress up the leagues. Now it seems that it doesn't matter how good your players are you will still be beaten by much inferior teams on a regular basis. you can find a tactic that works and then all of a sudden it just becomes useless. Great managers have a system and formation and fundamental tactical philosophy that they generally stick to and they don't use 1 tactic and formation up until chriistmas and then change it completely after christmas. People will say that opposition teams have worked you out but why couldnt they work you out at the beginning of November. The other problem with this game is that I have looked at these boards alot and I have come across very few players who have had any success at all with lower league teams. One of the best part of the game is taking over a lower league team and bringing them up with a team that you have built. If you can bring in good players for that level into your team and play against the likes of Barrow then who is going tom win? This doesn't seem to be the case.
I am sure people like Cleon will disagree with me and point to his sheff utd project which i have read but to be honest im not sure about. I read a previous comment from a poster who said that their friend had alot of success with this game and so he asked to see his tactics, his friend didn't even know where the tactics screen was. That just about sums the game up for me, in my opinion the fun has been taken out of the game and I am ready to look at championship manager 2007, anyone else tried it and do you have the same frustrations?

Competition is a good thing as it strives each other on, for the good of this game we really need some good alternatives but sadly we don't.
I've not tried CM 07 but i don't think it's up to scratch.
Despite it's flaws FM 07 is still by far the best game. By all means try something else or go back to a previous version, but imo that doesn't work either.

woodphil,
I can certainly understand your frusturation and dissapointment with the game. I was pretty much in the same situation a month or so ago. I read the sheffield project thread and a ton of other threads on tactics. They cleared up a few things for me and now I'm doing much better with this game, but I still agree with what you're trying to say about the enjoyment being gone, or almost gone.

Many things/aspects in this game don't make sense if you were to try to apply them to how football works in real life. For example the whole 4-2-4 switch the AI pulls towards the last 10 minutes of the game. And yes, there are ways to prevent it but you shouldn't really have too if you're an elite team playing against some cellar-dweller team you never heard of.

Also when you score first, and the oppositions seems to equalize almost instantly. There was actually a study done regarding the anatomy of football and it showed that there's really only 1% chance of a team conceding a goal just after scoring one.

Unfortunately, like andy says, FM is still the best game out there and I'm hoping the designers are reading these forums everyday because there are many less than happy people here. More than ever, from what I've noticed

Agreed. The game is far to difficult now and only caters to the Hard Core Gamer, gone are the days for people like myself, who just want to sit down, play a few games and sign a few players. Now if I use a tactic and win a few games with it, after about 5 the AI cracks the tactic and I start losing BADLY! I hope SI change the game for FM08 to make it much much much easier and less emphasis on tactics. Or give the option for the casual gamer to play the game and enjoy it without getting punished by the AI all the time.

Rant over :p

i suggest u all read the skill levels thread for the answers to all ur queries....and fr the last time there is no such thing as the AI crackin tactics...its just the mid-season re-rank is relatively easy to deal with.

FuSS, I read different things. Some people claim there is mid-season re-rank, some people claim AI checks your team before every game. I'd like to know the official words from SI on this if possible.

If this woodphil has a problem why dont SI reply. Have you noticed they only reply occassionally in general queries and never in this forum, just moderators.

Im at a dilemma as my players dont listen to my instructions, if i play wit low CF they dwaddle on ball and normal CF they do what they like.

Hi Badboy500,

I would suggest that you look again at whether creative freedom does what some on this forum suggest.

I have finally managed to dismiss the argument that lower creative freedom means that player obey your instructions and high mean they do their own thing.

I respect a lot of the other posters on this forum, but don't take everything you here as gospel.

If you player is dawdling on the ball it probably has more to do with a difference in mentality settings between you players as they are unable to find a suitble person to pass to.

I manage Vauxhall Motors and even with these players, I do not encounter these problem like I use to.

They are all on team mentality apart from the defenders , CD's are low n fullbacks normal.
I was experimenting with instructions, such as cross from byline which wasn't happening until low cf.

Then they all started to jst dwaddle on the ball as i took TTB's of a lot of players to improve possesion.

Anyay Leroy188 what tactic do you use for your team.

Hi Badboy500,

I usually play a 4-4-2 formation.
I leave team mentality on normal.
I usually play on striker, my best one, on attacking mentality.
I close down with my wingers and one striker. 2 DC rarely close down, the rest on team CD normal.
I play a normal D-Line.
I timewaste rarely at home, normal away.
passing style is 14(Direct)
tempo is 12(Normal)
width is 12(Normal)

I lower creative freedom on my DC's and increase it on 1 or 2 of my best creative players.

I dont CA unless I am leading.
