Tactics & Training Tips

It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

I continue to have the problem of carrying a 1 or 2 goal lead into the final 20 minutes of the match and not being able to protect the score. No matter what I do, ultra defensive, defensive line deep, time wasting on high, inevitably I am still susceptible to my defensive line playing too far foward, the opponent lobbing the ball over them, and a striker outpacing them for one-on-one chances. This always happens no matter how strong or week my opponent is. It seems all any team has to do is put 4 men forward and then can bombard me with shots for the last 10 minutes of the match until they get their tying goal. How can I prevent this???

When a team changes to a 4 2 4 formation I tend to change to a 5 4 1 and lower my defensive line to first notch of deep. I also change to direct passing and high tempo and take forward runs off my fullbacks and midfielders.

Seems to work quite well

go defensive, counter attack, man mark their wingers, go direct and pass down the wings. I never seem to have this problem after applying this

Same here, when I see the opposition change to the dreaded 4 2 4 I sit back and watch them make an amazing comeback. Have tried loads of different ways to combat it, some have worked a bit. I'll try what you suggest timpino, will be back to comment after I've tried it. Hope it works, am a desperate man

Opposition instructions: Tight marking and Pressing always on the top 4. then down both flanks and press always on the defensive 4. i have very very good headers in my back four so its all good if the start making long balls from the backline up for the 4 attackars. works for me almost always.

There was a thread on this before, I not sure what its called but the advice seemed to be this.

If your playing as a 4-4-2 go to counter attack and have no arrows except for your strikers having sarrows to the wide positions.

Have your defenders on man marking (possibly tight) but have your centre backs on direct passing and have the general play for the team on wide.

The idea behind this is to try and exploit the wide positions where the opposition is vunerable.

I'm not sure about some of the individual tactics but the original topic was called something like 'how to counter 4-2-4?'

Hope this gives you some ideas.

i have been having good results with something similar, with passing focussed down the flanks and the amc (or mc-a) rushing all the way forward on the break.

what works for me is rather simple.

I play 442 with AM wingers. pretty much the only thing I change is giving my wingers barrows, so they come back and help out. I always have counter attack on in any of my tactics, and I am pretty sure that this is quite essential at this point. (for those saying CA at home with attacking tactics is nonsense... about 30 seasons of experience proove you all wrong at least with my tactics)

more times than not I still make the goal that gives me the edge rather than conceiving. I do not go more defensive in mentality or anything. The best defense is attack
