I can never really use my wingers (and CMs for that matter) to full effect. My defence usually play well and my attackers play well, but my midfield dont seem to do much. My highest assist rate you would expect would be from my wingers, but it is always from my target man (eddie johnson - 47 assists - 32 goals!!)
How can i use my midfield to the best of their ability?

I think you want run with ball often for all your midfield (though perhaps not a defensively minded midfielder). Attacking CM's should run forward often, wingers should not, unless you don't use farrows on them.

Assign a playmaker to one of your midfielders, play will go through him and other midfielders will be brought into the play as well. I don't understand how your attackers can play well if your midfielders can't tbh. Are your defenders pressing long balls up the pitch to your attackers so that your midfielders can't do anything? If so, shorten the passing of your defenders. Increase your strikers' mentality by a few notches so they would be further up field and play would go through your midfield before reaching them.

Seriously!!!
Give me any evidence that you can play a player out of position by increasing the mentality... You really should know that you are talking about before posting such nonsense!
Heres so many B/S theories in this forum that it is by no surprise that many people suffer with this game. It only creates confusion.
*sigh*

Picked this one up off Cleon in Sheff Utd thread. If they have forward runs often they will be too far advanced down the pitch to pick up the ball and run with it, and the full back can easily keep and eye on them. It seems to me either use farrows OR forward runs often, but I think wingers are most effective (in a 442 or similar formation) when they wait, pick up the ball, run past the full back and can then make a cross.

I play a 442 with AM wingers. After many seasons (am in 2013 currently and done plenty of tweaking the entire time) I found that my wingers work best with forward runs often, run with ball often, cross often (not from byline or anything, mixed). the rest on mixed. Attacking mentality. dont use farrows.
since the MC going forward has been mentioned. I got my MC with a farrow to the middle (the center AMC position) and it did NOT work with forward runs and run with ball on often. since I put all his options to mixed (through balls on often though), they performed MUCH better.

I play 4-5-1 formation with long Forward Arrows on my Wingers, often Forward runs, it works great.
But: I will test out what you just said here, always want to improve my game. But so far my Wingers are at the start of the Run Line of the arrow, so I have my doubt.

One reason for your lack of assists could be that you have target man selected, and thus the target man is looking to flick or assist to the main striker

I have found that having your wingers on forward runs often works better then having them on mixed. I know Cleon says have them on mixed but I found that it really slow down my game and decreases the scoring chances. Once I set my wingers to FWR often I noticed my team playing a much better attacking game.
