How good are they? Has anybody used them for any period of time? They seem very simple to be honest, but i played a couple of games with default 4-4-2 normal and it was very solid. so want to know if anybody has used them over a period and seen the results

In FM07 With Std Spurs squad on Holiday for season and finished 2nd.

With the Patch FM07 tactics could be working again, and I've had some good results with only minor variations from default.

The difference between FM07 and FM08 appears to be non 442 tactics used by AI, specific instructions appear to help or use a DM against Newcastle Home tactic of 41212.

Default Tactics

It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.
