2010/2011 Barrow League One
The season began with us actually spending some cash, to the sum of £140k on 3 players (now allowed £500k in a season) but failed to impress the pundits with worst ever odds of 80-1. The weekly wages were now £16k but with still no increase to competetive L1 payrolls,a biggest ever squad of 22 was still £4k under budget.
We played in a series of 4 game streak wins followed by losing the next 4, until we sat in 6th place after 20 games. From there, the season trailed off, particularly in the final third (as did most of our attacks.) This wasn't helped by the lack of loanees (only 1 all season).
Due to knowing early on that we would stay up but lacked the quality to challenge for promotion, I took the option to cash in on a couple of traitors who wouldn't sign new contracts. A striker left for £85k just 3 goals short of the club record, held by a player who played only in my first 2 seasons. This latter player returned to the club on trial at the start of the season but we couldn't agree contract terms. The other sale was my star midfielder for a new record £325k, which weakened us considerably but built for the long term future.
League 1: Pos 17th (again) W17 D8 L21 Pts59
FA Cup: 3rd Round lost 0-1A Arsenal (thanks for sending out you reserve team, Mr.Bespectacled Frenchman- one of 6 managers at the same club they started at in England)
League Cup: 1st Round lost 1-3H Cambridge L2
Vans Trophy: Southern QF lost 1-2H Walsall L2
A solid season in which we continued to work towards getting that record 8th place in L1. The division was considerably weaker than 09/10 which cut down the number of thrashings we received. I will keep posting this thread but I've decided to alternate my seasons at Barrow with a separate game in South America (Div3 Brazil, of course). As Barrow appear to have reached a consistent phase, I don't want to risk getting bored with several seasons of L1 survival. Hopefully, alternating will keep both games fresh and get me back to some truly hideous struggling- I'll post Brazil on another thread.

Taken from the Rules and Guidelines thread:

quote:
3) Only one update thread per month may be started, i.e., If you start an update on the 1st of April you won't be allowed to start another until the 1st of May - only one update ongoing at any time. This specifically includes "game crashed", "got sacked and started afresh" and any other excuse.

Other than that, enjoyable stuff to read, (hope you)KUTGW!! |

Sorry, I won't post Brazil Div 3 update but I obviously will continue with Barrow until:
A. We achieve our long term goal
B. I'm sacked
C. FM 05/06 is released!

The best tactic is to stop playing when you've drunk too much whisky. Other than that, tactic sharing is not allowed on this forum. Read the rules at the top, if you are unsure on anything else.

Perhaps, but sometimes you need to be a little careful. Particularly when your team has 3 players with the same name, one of whom is rubbish and two of whom are good and a team from a higher league comes a-calling...

2011/2012 Barrow League One
Putting down the bottle, I noticed that we'd signed a record 9 players in the close season. 50-1 seemed about right and with a transfer budget of £1.2M! (don't worry I spent nothing all season) more survival looked highly likely. The wage budget now stood at £21k but we still couldn't attract anyone who would transform our team.
After two thirds of the season, we had yet to escape the relegation zone. A spell of 9 straight losses left me feeling that we were truly doomed, coupled with our total failure to get anyone to join the club due to low wage ceiling or even on loan.
In desperation, we turned to a loan star of our successive promotion seasons, who had lost his place at his now EC side. This proved to be the catalyst, as we took 17pts from 8 games to reach safety with a game to spare. This left us 2 places behind newly promoted Carlisle (still never beaten them!) although Morecambe did drop out of L2, to cheer our spirits (which we drank).
League 1: Pos 18th W15 D9 L22 Pts54 (now longest spell Barrow have had in L1 beating RL record!)
FA Cup: 1st Round lost 1-2A Northwich Conf Nat (ow- though should be used to this by now)
League Cup: 2nd Round lost 0-2A Yeovil L2
Vans Trophy: 2nd Round lost 1-4A Reading L1 (one day we will have a cup run)
Avg attendance: 4238 (new record)
Next season looks terrifying with the loss of L1's top goalscorer on a freebie (no-one would buy him!) and the retirement of the last 2 players who've been there since the start of the game. They hang up their boots and go to run pubs after 350 and 330 appearances. On a positive note, I talked the board into finally doing something about our awful training facilities, so no broken bottles in the goalmouth any more!
