In the earlier incarnations on the game we were allowed 2 loan players, In CM4 we went to the current position of allowing 4 loan players. I personally felt that I was depending too much on my loan players as they effectively became the engine of the team. So I had a career completely without loans only crashed and burned once before getting the team settled and I have got to say it felt great to get promotion entirely from your own bunch of players rather than getting in spotty faced future stars. The first 2 years were very tough but after that it was pretty much business as usual. I have heard of other people (I believe Nobby had a go at it) only signing players whose surname began with a certain letter etc. Any else tried weird self imposed restrictions.
Apart from not loaning players everything else was LLM so put the torches away!
Liverpool did have a couple of excellent Scottish players in their team when they were the kings of Europe. Funny enough they never did (that I can remember) have a Scottish goalie )
Not sure what you intended with this, but if it's a debate about loanie practices, I'll have a go. I don't use them unless it's a complete disaster. In fact I don't think I've ever had to loan a player. But if for instance both goalies are out injured I would probably try to get a short loan. I see, especially now in FM06, that AI teams loan players all over the place. Means they have an advantage over me, but it's more fun to succeed with your own team, than with the quality of others.
I did notice about lots of messages about the AI teams loaning players. Cheating B@stards. Next the AI teams will be using the editor to make their tems better.
As for the original question, it completely depends on my team and the circumstancies. If I do badly need a defender and don't have the dosh to sign one I'll probably start looking my longlist for loan listed defenders and will most likely try to land one or two of those.
In my last save I've had the very same defender loaned to me for the season during the last 3 seasons before raising the money to finally sign him.
On the other hand, I've had saves in which I didn't need a single loan for all the career.
