The reason for this is a highly sophisticated theory of mass psychology called "Floodgate scenario". It mainly involves ignorant people who think it's stupid not to name players, name a well known guy, others see this and think they add to the discussion by naming other (not so well known players), voila.

Don't worry though. It's perfectly normal that you won't grasp all concepts of LLM immediately. It's a culture, and like with all cultures, one has to treat it with respect in order to even remotely understand it.

There used to be three articles about LLM on SI page in times of CM00/01 by Ian. I seem to be unable to find them, but they were an excellent introductino to the world of LLM. At least for me. I know that Ian hasn't been that proud of them, but I also think that he has them locked on his computer somwhere.
