Ya that method is very old now. It's always been a good technique, but now i think PS6/7 users can move forward to a more functional method.

I just happen to have this method written out. Just need to 'html' it. It's not long or complex at all either.

I'll say this though... it's takes but 3 extremely simple steps to create the effect, the results are a lot cleaner overall, and it allows for more versitility than the effect created using the older method -- which was actually originally created for PS4/5.
Also... unlike the old method, your text is still fully editable, and... your document can have any dimensions - i.e. it doesn't HAVE to be of equal proportions.

I should have it done in a day or so, if anyone's interested in this effect. It does though have a small minor drawback. But i'll explain how to workaround it, and it's not hard to do either.
Neither of these old and new methods is perfect though, because a vector app is king for this effect... but this new one is as close as PS will get at the moment.

Here's a quick example...
Note how this typically hard to read font style has not been made even harder to read, by bending and stretching the letters with the PC filter? That's one of the benefits of this new method. Another nice benefit is that using the old method produced a result half the size of the canvas... not so with the new method -- it creates a result that is scaleable to whatever circular size you want on-the-fly.

I'll be waiting too, Mark! I use Illustrator very infrequently, but when I do, it's always for something like this and I'd love to by-step if possible.
