With football manager 2008, we have seen the introduction of in depth coach reports. An addition which makes it a lot easier to analyse players and their role in the team (some will argue that the reports have made this too easy). The coach reports equal the depth of the scout reports we recieved in FM 07. Now i feel its time for in depth Physio reports.
For long time i have wanted more involvement in the physio, treatment and rehabilitation of my players. If a player gets injured ; i want to know why. I want to ask the physio the best course of action. I want to know the pros and cons of surgical intervention, I would like to know the best form of light training as he recovers. I would like to know if he can be gradually introduced to first team football or should he play a hand full of games in the reserve team. All are relevent and should be individual to the type of injury and type of player.
I would also like to know if a player is overweight. Is his body fat percentage too high for his position and style of play, eg GK tend to have higher body fat. The physio might think that your target man could beef up a bit to challenge the centre backs. This sort of involvement with the youth team could, physically speaking, help to bring on some players.
I would also like the option to employ a team doctor. I know this is an addition of mainly top flight clubs but if it is going on in real life then it should be included in the game. After all, if my player gets flu or food poisoning, i would really want a doctor to assess him, not my physio. Team doctors to play an immportant part in top flight football today.
In their current state, physio's in FM 08 are generally pointless. Does anyone else think that the physiotherapy attribute only contributing to the prediction of the duration of the players recovery is a little dated? I understand that most people wont see the point in this extra detail. And some will argue once you start adding team doctors, you need to add dieticians, hydrotherapists, aromatherapists etc etc. But to me, adding detail to physio reports is the next line of progression for the reports section of the game.
Well, they could start by making injuries more sensible.
For example, player gets injured in a match and the injury message says he gets injured in training.
But we know about the disconnects in FM08...
Secondly, the game could have more detail, for example, "Player X pulled a thigh muscle while warming up for the game." Happens all the time IRL.
Injuries could also have context based on the surface the game is being played on. A hard surface in summer will have a different effect on players than a sodden one in winter.
While on the subject: has anyone ever played a game at 34 degrees in blazing sunshine and have a player "skid across the turf at full stretch" after scoring a goal? There's a sure fire way to get injured.
Anyhoo...
One issue about more detail in the whole physio/injury side of things is that you'll end up needing a degree in medicine, although, perhaps SI can promote the game as promoting education...
I think first we need to get some physio feedbback DURING the matches.
e.g. a player gets a knock, i have ABSOLUTELY no way of knwoing whether he's got a scratch on his face or he's torn something. (granted i can check his fitness but that's only a rough guess)
Just a quick way of my physio telling me that either:
A) "jeff has cut his leg - nothing major but take him off if the game is won" or
B) "bob has twisted his ankle - could be bad, we don't know, he can play on but it might make it worse"
IRL managers have access to this info, why the hell don't we get this in FM????
An area that has just been ignored for years imo. Although judging by SIs responses to my previous threads calling for change i doubt anything will happen. This feature makes far too much sense to bother including it!
This area has been completely ignored for years. As has been said, it is such a toss up when you get an injury in the 60th minute having already made your three subs as to if you should keep the player on. 'player feels dull ache in knee with pain on running'- so i would take him off, 'player has spained his wrist'- in a close game i will risk the lad. A percentage is not enough!
I was speaking to the Man Utd club doctor and it is suprising just how involved they are with the team. With the right exercise and training you can alter a players injury proneness and to some extent natural fitness. Team doctors also deal with issues like asthma and depression but that might be branching off a bit too much. Although many a time i have had a player that has depresses under a major concern, maybe i should be able to send him to the team doc.
It should not be too hard for the game to generate greying 40 year olds with a liscence to practice medicine to employ. We have Supporter Spokespersons!!
