I was wondering if player values are at all necessary to the game. Most players transfer for well above their value, others on rare occasions go for less but only very rarely do players actually go for their value. So why have values at all? Wouldn't it be better for each individual manager to decide how much their player is worth to them based on the quality of the player, other players in the same position, financial stability of the club etc?
Does anyone know how the values are calculated or what relavence they actually have to the selling price because as far as I can see there isn't any. And as prices change so much depending on various things, what is the point of a set value for each player?
You could easily be fooled by form and opposition, for example. It's possible to inflate Titus Bramble's value to a stupid amount and some sucker is bound to fall for it.
Let's face it - in real life, was Veron worth £30 million to Manchester United? How about £30 million Shevchenko? These players were bought on what their clubs thought their potential returns were. Essentially, I don't think players are ever bought on what they give the team within a season.
And from what I think, a club is never the one that decides a player's value. If there is demand for a player, his value goes up, quite simply.
