Gigi,
I tried out your tactical theories regarding the defensive line being very very low and closing down on all attacking players and so far my results have been less then acceptable.
I was able to win only one match at home, and after that I drew 5 in a row, which may be good for some teams but not when you're playing with Barca.
I do like your idea regarding the defensive line, and I think I'm going to use it more from now on, but the idea about all midfielders and strikers on very high closing down doesn't seem all that logical, at least not to me.
I also observed in my stats that after I started using high closing down that my shots on goal have dramatically gone down. I would still get plenty of shots, just not on goal. I think by having everyone in attack on maximum closing down drags way too many players out of position, so that when you do get the ball back and start an attack, many of them are out of position to finish off a successful attack as a team. That's just my observation.
Once I went back to my own tactic, everything seemed to go well again. I'm wondering though if you really need certain types of players in order to pull off this tactic.
What do you think of all this?
| Obviously, I don't know for sure, but my analysis is that I have strong defenders with good positional sense, good heading ability. Since I defend very deep combined with a lot of pressing from my midfielders, I seem to deny my opponents space and time. My deep defensive line make sure there isn't much space and the opposition pretty much limited to crosses. My defenders and my keeper take excellent care of these. Also, my defenders have low closing down, so this makes sure they hold their positions.
Therefore, I think you need defenders with good positioning, heading, strength. Moreover, I have a very good DMC, who intercepts and neutralizes passes aimed at the oppositions forwards. My other midfielders are hard working box-to-box midfielders who are very good at pressing the opponents.
I can't say what's wrong with your team, only that it has worked extremely well for me, but maybe just I've been lucky.
Just keep on tweaking your tactics a little bit!

Gigi,
Read your comments with great interest - looks as though it's working.
Would you mind taking a look at my tactic - it does work very very well, but based on your theories - take alook and change anything you want in terms of the defensive line & mentalities.
Give it a try and see what you think - could you then send me the tactic back... mdodgson@googlemail.com.

| No problem, I can do that. But I can't do it for a day or two, because at the moment I'm without the game.

I suppose we all have our own ways of playing. My style is rather opposite from your's. All my attacking players, except for one of my strikers do not close down much. What ends up happening is that they atually anticipate the passes that the opposition makes and intercepts them and then launches an attack. This way no one get dragged out of position.

I think that's the beauty of the game. People do things in different way. If there were to be one all-conquering tactic, then the game would loose it's magic, at least for me.

Hi i am new to this forum,
I am reading with interest about this topic.
How do you change the defensive line to 1 cos im not sure where to change it.
I can see how you change closing down but not defensive line.
Am i being thick or what.
1. Play with defensive line as deep as possible (usually setting 1)
2. Set all player's closing down to maximum (setting 20), no matter what their workrate is. Here's I'm a bit confused, do you really mean all players, including DCs and GK?
Please correct me if I've made incorrect conclussions.
| No, for GK, DC and FB I have "rarely" closing down, otherwise I think they would run the risk of being out of position too often. Sometimes I put my FB closing down to normal also. </BLOCKQUOTE>
