So to summarize:
1. Play with defensive line as deep as possible (usually setting 1)
2. Set all player's closing down to maximum (setting 20), no matter what their workrate is. Here's I'm a bit confused, do you really mean all players, including DCs and GK?
Please correct me if I've made incorrect conclussions.

| No, for GK, DC and FB I have "rarely" closing down, otherwise I think they would run the risk of being out of position too often. Sometimes I put my FB closing down to normal also.

WOW! Just...WOW!
I'd been struggling with my 3-1-3-2-1 tactic for almost an entire season. Started off brilliantly with some good results then that darn re-ranking sussed me out and I couldn't win for toffee. Was about to create a thread asking for help because I thought I had the makings of a good tactic.
You know how it is: the bulk of the possession, enough shots on goal, opposition score from their 4 chances and those bl00dy "supa keepazzz".
Anyway, I read this thread, implemented it and went from lower mid-table to 6th place with my Liverpool team after a run of 10 wins, 1 draw and 1 defeat. Saved my neck from the sack as the board only wanted European football.
I'm about to start my 4th season and my squad is stronger so will get a chance to rotate to avoid the usual mid-season slump and hopefully the dreaded reranking won't affect me too much as I have good players. We'll see.
Anyway, thanks for the tip!
| Looks that you doing really fine. It's nice to be able to come up with an idea that works for people. Keep on moving up in the table!

This tip is by far the most useful ive ever come across.
I have one question though. At what mentality do you set your midfielders and attackers? Ive used this tip with a 4CB-DMC-MC-AML-AMR-2ST. Ive found that i always concede in every game that i play, but always manage to out score most teams. I could possibly put this down to my fairly average defence (Racing Santander). I was just wondering what measures i could take in order to limit the oppositions chances. Any suggestions?

very good tip indeed-i would say it needs to have low mentality and closing down on the DC's though to work. ALso closing down from the mid and strikers is a must with high mentality.

Gigi,
Read your comments with great interest - looks as though it's working.
Would you mind taking a look at my tactic - it does work very very well, but based on your theories - take alook and change anything you want in terms of the defensive line & mentalities.
Give it a try and see what you think - could you then send me the tactic back... mdodgson@googlemail.com.

Gigi,
I tried out your tactical theories regarding the defensive line being very very low and closing down on all attacking players and so far my results have been less then acceptable.
I was able to win only one match at home, and after that I drew 5 in a row, which may be good for some teams but not when you're playing with Barca.
I do like your idea regarding the defensive line, and I think I'm going to use it more from now on, but the idea about all midfielders and strikers on very high closing down doesn't seem all that logical, at least not to me.
I also observed in my stats that after I started using high closing down that my shots on goal have dramatically gone down. I would still get plenty of shots, just not on goal. I think by having everyone in attack on maximum closing down drags way too many players out of position, so that when you do get the ball back and start an attack, many of them are out of position to finish off a successful attack as a team. That's just my observation.
Once I went back to my own tactic, everything seemed to go well again. I'm wondering though if you really need certain types of players in order to pull off this tactic.
What do you think of all this?
