It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

I prefer a normal defensive line, but put my DCs on barrows. I also use low mentality and closing down for the DCs, normal tackling. FBs are between normal and often in closing down (depending on the player) tackling hard. I want to play positioning with the DCs. Also a DMC with high closing down, and defensive mentality is CRUCIAL for this tactic.

Interesting stuff Gigi. I take it you play with an anchorman sitting in front of your defense? I find my team too stretched if I don't do this when sitting deep when defending.

I like the 'och' in your last post when you mean to say 'and' by the way
Yes, I'm using an anchorman in front of my defence. I either play a narrow diamond formation or a 4-1-3-2 formation. Also, I seemed to combine Swedish and English in the post :-)

I can't speak for everyone, just my own game. But so far in my game I noticed a real difference when I lowered the defensive line. Of course, the opponent will still get chances, but a lot fewer through balls over your defence, and that's a big difference for my team and in my game.

Maybe it will not work that well for your team, but the only way is to elaborate with the defensive line and tune the closing down settings.

Hi Gigi,

i gave it a try with my west ham team in an away game @ arsenal. I set the Defenders Mentality to 1 and had the D-Line on 1, too. Won that game quite suprisingly 2:1... The most impressive thing was to see that henry for example did only get one single longshot the whole game. Really liked it.

It kinda suits my play since i play

==FC===FC==
==========
==MC=MC=MC=
====DM=====
FB=DC=DC=FB

Will give it a few more tries...may the arsenal game was just luck since i am in a 7game winning streak atm. greets

I understand how this can work for a defensive tactic but what about an offensive one. Would you still have your defenders on mentality of 1 and a very deep defensive line?

It's nice to see people getting good results playing with a very deep defensive line. I often play 4-4-2 diamond at home and away I tend to play 4-1-3-2.

When I analyse my tactic decision to play with a deep defensive line together with high attacking mentality on several attacking players, my reasoning is as follows:
When the opposition has the ball in my half my defenders take up a deep position. From what I have understood mentality decides how often your players will look to attack. So, in my opinion these two tactic decisions can work together in a logical way. The players I have set on attacking mentality will often look to attack the opposition, but when we loose the ball and the opponents take the ball into our own half, then my team will take up a deep position.

IMO, these two things don't contrast each other. I think that some people have trouble to agree with me, because they tend to interpret in a different way what mentality and defensive line really mean.

I don't say I know how it works, but football-wise and how the game works, I find it logical.
