for a few seasons now, ive been trying to figure out how to make best use of my target man, without resorting to this forum, but i just cant seem to get him to hit the heights of some of the other target men ive read about.
Now, im not entirely sure what the most important stats for a target man are, but they are the ones that would stand out to me.
I currently play
GK
DL DC DC DR
DM
MR ML
AM AM
SC
With F'Arrows for the AMs.
Now i obviously have the Target Man Supply 'To Head', since hes so tall and strong, and have the 'Use Target Man' box ticked, and obviously have the target man put in the 'Target Men' section,
But my two AM's seem to be winning and attempting more headers than my Target Man
They get averagly 15 headers each a game, and since they are not designed to be target men, only win around 4 or 5, and my target man gets around 10 headers a game, and usually wins 8 or 9.
So i know if i use him correctly, he will be a force for my team, but i just cant figure out how, any help would be very very welcome.
the only thing i would do different is to put the players crossing focus on target man i.e the wingers and full backs cross from deep/mixed/byline to Target Man
Geordie's point is very useful, and I would try and take heed of it as soon as possible.
Another thing to consider is how you see the team creating chances. By selecting "To Head" you're making it a lot harder for your target man to control the ball. More often than not he will be flicking the ball on. Without a faster striker alongside him, this could lead to you losing posession quite a bit. With two AM's behind him, I'd be inclined personally, to set Target Man Supply to "To Feet", so that your Target Man can bring the ball down, and lay the ball back. If he has good balance, you might also want to tick "Hold Up Ball".
If you intend to make the most of his heading ability in the box, I'd be inclined to play more of a 4-3-3. With the AM's being out wide as wingers and the MR and ML tucked inside as MC's. This means you'll be encouraging your wingers to pick the ball up further up the field, which in turn means your striker should be further forward during all yoru attacks.
Alternatively, you could give the AM farrows, and set Target Man supply to "Mixed". This will hopefully give you some variety to your attacks. Chances are if the ball is lobbed forward, at least one of the AM's will have run on to anticipate the flick on, whilst another might hopefully be nearby for a the lay-back. Also if the ball is delivered along the ground, it gives your target man the chance to hold up the ball (utilising his strength and balacne) whilst your AM's join the attack giving you some more options.
You should also check what passing style the potential players feeding him has. The defenders might be banging the ball using direct and long pass which only reaches the AM as the striker is to far ahead (forward runs often?). Try to set the wingers on direct passing also to bring up the ball in the air.
Also you should try lowering the Target Man's mentality, and increasing that of the AMCs, which will allow him to drop deep and get flick-ons to the AMCs.
Thanks for the help guys. Since taking your advice, hes scored 16 in 23 games, has 13 assist along with that, and is generally involved in all my attacks.
