It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default Stupid goals

I'm seriously getting tired of this ..

Nigh on every goal I concede is something that a fat pub team would be ashamed of - let alone a Premiership team and there is nothing I can do to change it ..

This last one just takes the biscuit : Throw in for the opposition on their right flank .. My left FB marking his man - fine .. My left CB marking his man - fine .. my right CB stood in no-mans land in front of the throw in taker and 20 yards out of position (he just wandered over their for a laugh - no marking or tight marking or nothing) .. my right FB stood 5 yards from my left FB marking no-one (in line with the horizontal line marking of the 6 yard box - on the opposite side of where he should be) ..

Opposition left winger stood with no-one within 30 yards of him on the corner of the penalty box on the left (his correct) side ..

Result? Quick throw .. cross field ball .. right winger controls the ball, has a kip, something to eat and drink and a quick cigar .. stands up, does a few party tricks and signs a few autographs and then rifles it in the bottom corner of the net ..

Seriously - forget about tactics, sliders, RoT, global settings and mystical Llamas .. International quality defenders should know where to line up and stand to defend properly ..

Now this is something that happens often - FBs all over the place and no slider manipulation does anything to change it (as with most players).

As a test - I was messing about with the sliders trying to keep a ridgid back line .. had my FBs on Mentality 1 .. CF 1 .. For Runs .. rare - basically everything imaginable to stop them running forward ..

Result? FBs constantly cropping up in and around the opposition penalty box .. In "real" world games, despite again doing the logical things and telling them to hang back .. they'll constantly push on when the opposition has the ball on their side of the field basically giving you a back 3 where a simple ball in behind the FB tears you wide open ..

Same is true with a DM .. reguarly you see him as the most farthest forward midfield player .. despite telling him to just sit in front of the back four - he'll tear-arse forward and the first opportunity ..

Before people come back and say "Tactics" .. I say no.

I have a DM on 2 notches above my CDs metality ..forward runs - rare .. CF .. far left .. his PMs have nothing about him making forward runs .. yet he'll often crop up on the edge of the opposition penalty box and get caught way out of position when they break ..

Again, we're talking about international class players here, not some guy who got a game because a team was short on players and he was just passing by walking his dog ..

Seriously, I give up .. you can't change what you see on the field .. simple as that. Yes, you might be able to change some variables in global mathmatical formulaes .. but if dumb AI can't even tell a player how to defend a throw in and not leave a player in acres of space then no amount of jiggery pokery with sliders is going to make any difference.

Rant over ..

All fair points, even with deep defensive lines and settings at a minimum, defenders and DM's often can be seen going for goal, yes.

Not sure if you want any advice, or just a rant, as you sound like you know what your doing but,

a) I find aggressive formations work, accept you are going to concede perhaps 1 or 2 against better teams, but try and score 3 or more - to this end I use defenders on a halfway setting (mentality)

b)the wide fbs often get cauoght out by the throug hor long ball behind them - perhaps try barrows here?

that's a good idea, put barrows on all your players that you want to stay back!

The match engine is still warped to display goals.

Players suddenly become slow, ignore blatantly obvious things such as the flight of the ball and get caught out.

It is so annoying when a player suddenly slows, ignores the fact that the ball is drifting 20 yards the other way over his head, he runs the wrong way. AI striker doesn't, he runs after the ball before slotting the finish through your goalkeepers body.

Well what really annoys with it is that you can go away to a tough side in the division : a Chelsea / Man Utd / Arsenal etc and what you see is fine and you battle and grind out a 0-0 or nick a 1-0 win ..

.. then next week you play one of the poor teams and get beat 3-0 because your players decide to go walkabouts and do all the wrong things ...

Ok, you may argue - "Important Matches" or "Complacency" and I'll agree to certain extent that some players may be more up for it vs the big teams than the little - but thats still no-excuse to leave players in 30 yards of space while your FBs get together to talk about the bird in the front row of the North Stand with the big wotsits ..

The more I play FM in all its incarnations - the more I believe a lot of it is pre-determined.

I had a quarter-final cup match yesterday .. I waltzed into a 2-0 lead (at home) and it remained so till 80 minutes - then the AI switched into "got to beat the squidgy human" mode .. It got a blatently offside goal given to it (3 yards at least) and then a last second penalty to square the game 2-2 ..

Ok, I thought, cheated but I can accept that despite the opposition bringing on the likes of Ronaldinho / Ronaldo / God etc in false wigs and funny moustaches and calling them Gordon Bloggs and Joe Smith.

So I go to the replay .. and find myself 2-0 down in 15 minutes - to a blatent offside goal and a penalty .. and I'd had a perfectly good goal disallowed for offside ..

.. Never done this before - I cheated .. and replayed the game ..

20 minutes in - 2-0 down to a dodgey offside and a penalty .. WTF? I kid you not

So I did it again - and this time things went 'normal' - got 3-0 up (I was a far superior team) .. on came God from the bench with 10 minutes left .. pulled it back to 3-2 by himself - with a dodgey offside goal and a penalty.

So really, sliders and tactics?

that's amazing! i played wigan beat them 5-0 accidently loaded the same game played them again with the same tactics, they played the same and everything was the same....beat them 2-1! now how is that fair? if i changed something then fair enough but that tells me that it isn't all based on tactics! its not like 3/4 of my goals in the first game was offside or weird pass backs, they were all good goals because of my tactics!
So really, sliders and tactics?

I think you miss the point - not conceded a penalty all season .. and in 4 games vs the same team (albeit 2 of them reloads) the same AI team each time gets one penalty in each game ..

So cut the sarcasm ..
