They have the stats I require for my back-up in my opinion and not being big headed I hav not particularly failed on FM finishing 2nd with Villa and 6th with Fulham (own tactic) in first seasons.

Where can I improve with my first team people?

You need better FB's as thats the place which can be exploited most easily. See if Christian Pander is still available. He's generally out of contract end of season 1. If he is, then get him. Else, sometimes Liverpool have Fabio Aurelio rotting in the reserves and he's available very cheap. If he is, get him as he's brilliant. For RB, Chimbonda is pretty good I suppose. And Melberg can play there as well. Get another CB who can play RB too. Samba is brilliant so try him. What 3 teams went down last season? Go and raid them for their good players as you'll be able to pick them up cheapish.

Go to R.Madrid and bid for Baptista. He's backup there and again available cheap. He's a quality player and very versatile. Plus he's experienced at the CL level. He's better than Nolan and can slot in for him. If you want another ST (although doesnt look like you need one), get Saviola from there too as he'll be cheap as well. You can also get Gudjohnsen from Barca if you need a good, experienced backup to Berba & Martins. I'm not sure how good Maloney is on the wings even if he did win those awards. See if you can get Belluschi. He's brilliant. That should be enough to give you a good chance of winning the quad. Just get rid of the average players in the team and ones you hardly ever use. Or just stick them in the reserves.

I would try for Marcelo from Madrid as Wilfred Bouma probably aint good enough and Marcelo's price rockets once you buy him, plus most importantly he is a very good left back.

Your also lacking quality CB's, look out for Breno and/or Christopher Samba who are both beast's of players and will be cheaper than most others.
