I'm playing a grey team. Expecting to win... The odds are rediculiously high for me to win. Yet nearly every through ball for the opposition and they score. Their offensive players are about 1/3 faster than mine. And they play 2-3 leagues bellow my current team...

Maybe you should put your defensive line deeper.

Or play them offside, if you think your defense is disciplined enough.

That's a very good tip. Thanks a lot. They won't be dissiplined enough so I won't be able to play the offside trap. Thanks for the advise.

No problem.

Just remember that there are two ways to set the defense's depth.

The first is by 'defensive line' in team instructions, but the better way (in my opinion) is by setting their individual mentality sliders.

The grey teams always win! They are too good.

it's impossible to play a defensive line deep enough to prevent through balls leading to one on ones, as the game's tactical engine won't allow it

A sweeper works wonders in this situation.

or a DM to cut off/not allow the through ball to be played.

All these things work well against normal teams, but "grey" teams seem to find a way past whatever you do .
