| Absolutely! I will be following up with another post later today on Team passing and going into team tempo and width as well!
sorry this is a long process here... I want to stress exactly how i've come up with my tactics and why. This way we can all learn how the sliders interrelate and play out on the pitch! Quote:

If you don't mind I will post my experiences in starting from scratch and trying the same sort of tactic, diamond, and hopefully I can get some help on where I go wrong.
If you think I hijack your thread too much then please let me know an I will start a fresh one.
I'm starting the game with the 7.02 patch and unemployed. As usual I expect to get a job after 3/4 season in either the Northern or Southern Conf. I will playing a bog standard 4-4-2 Diamond with wingers having short runs forward.

Greetings everyone!
in my last couple of posts we've covered: Individual Mentality
Team Mentality
Individual Passing
We've seen how we need to work as a team... keeping the IM of your boys fairly close together, and how moving up and down the IM setting will position them on the pitch. We've discussed how Team Mentality tells your team what type of style to play and how to play the ball. Don't forget that TM is set to your teams point guy, if you will, the guy on your team that you want to direct your Attack/Defense. Finally we've discussed how Individual Passing closely mirrors they type of play you want from your team. getting the ball to the DM to bring it up to the AMC/ Wings to set up the attack, or launching it from the DL/DR into the opposition's zone on the counter attack.
This brings us to Team Passing settings. Team Passing:
As the TM slider is connected to your playmaker's IM on the field, the Team Passing is different. Team passing is more this question, "what type of passing game do I want play?" Am i going for posession? am I Counter Attacking? What do I want my team to do? It is my belief that the Ind Passing sliders give instructions on how you want your players to act/think in regards to passing. I look at this as Passing mentality (in other words, how the players think and make decisions)... think of it this way...
Having the TP sliders set at short passing (6 clicks, any shorter is too short I find) = player looks to pass short / long on an approximate 70%/30% basis
Having the TP sliders set at direct/long (16 clicks) = Player looks to pass Short / Long on an approximate 30%/70% basis.
Having the TP sliders set in the middle (11 clicks) = Player looks to pass Short / Long on an approximate 50%/50% basis.
Are you following my thinking here? okay good.
Now where do you set your sliders? I will set my sliders depending on type of game I want to play based on the opponents tactics,
Opposing team has a direct style = I set to short passing TM
Opposing team has a possession style = I set to direct/long TM
Opposing team has a mixed style of passing = I set to short TM if I'm home team and Direct/Long if I'm Away TM
NOTE: these are not absolutes! Just my starting points and what I've found to be the general rule that works for me. Again you have to read the report to decide what to do. Once it is set, I RARELY will touch it during a match. if I need to tweek passing I nudge the Indv. Sliders up or down 2 notches accordingly.
what i have found is that I will use The three options above.. with the settings as noted
Team Passing sliders:
Possession (6)
Direct (16)
Mixed (11) rarely use this so far... maybe will in the future.
This concludes the Team Passing sliders and now leads us into tempo. Tempo:
Tempo is a very logical setting for your squad, therefore I will not dwell on this subject. Like Cleon and many others, you want to counter the tempo that the computer is using. For example
if the opposition uses:
High tempo = you counter with slow tempo
Slow tempo = you counter with a fast tempo
If it is not disclosed, this is where I relate this to my passing game
if I'm playing a game where the opposition is playing a direct style of play, you can asume that they are playing fairly defensively minded (NOT ALL THE TIME, but as a general rule) The reason for this is very simple.... There are very few players out there who can play a very fast paced, short passing game, for a long period of time very effectively. It just can't happen... with faster play comes more mistakes and it would take a VERY talented team to do this an entire game. to play a short (possession style game) the tempo needs to be a lower to allow for more creativity and movement of your other players to get into position to accept the pass. Where as if the opposition is playing a more direct style, they can and will want to move faster, to cover the area that the ball is in the area and to get into position to recieve the longer/pass. The tempo is higher because it has to be higher... they are not retaining posession per say, but rather getting the ball down the pitch and jockeying for position.
see what I mean here? It's pretty logical if you think about it.
Therefore, if the tempo of the game not disclosed in the scouting reports.... I will tailor my tempo to fit my passing game.
Short Possession style = Slower tempo
Direct/Counter Attack/ fast paced wide offensive style = higher tempo
I simply let my passing style decide my tempo in these situations. Therfore the only two tempo settings that I use to start out a game are:
Tempo (6 notches) for slower tempo
Tempo (16 notches) for faster Tempo
I will adjust this in game if I notice that they are out pacing me when I need to be faster and I'll bump it up a notch. vice versa if I need more even keeled passing in the possession game and I notice that my guys are acting hurried, I'll lower it a notch.
There is one other point that I would like to make about tempo and it relates to shooting and I will touch on that in my next post.
Cheers!
Ashyr

aye, that I do! This is something that I will touch WAY more in depth later in the discussion... I will say that i make logical choices in regards to those slider decisions
I do not want to tell you right at this moment what i set these sliders because I want to tell you my thoughts on exactly why I do what I do and how I learned it...so please, just be patient with me... i am working hard to make this a truly thorough thread that can be used as reference for designing your tactic.
Cheers!

Great post Ashyr!!!
I totally agree with you regarding the team mentallity and the individual mentallity concept. I have used this all the time in my game and I have experienced some difference with a change of team mentallity/ passing even though the individual mentallity/ passing remained unchanged. I just didn't had a proof and so couldn't express the same. I was never convinced with the view given in other threads in this forum that team mentallity overrides individual mentallity.
I have got bored with my tactics of playing a fast tempo and direct passing game. So I was planning to build a new tactic which will allow me to play the possesion game. I have already taken some idea from this thread and will follow the thread closely for the next few days. Like yours, I am also trying to build a 442 diamond tactics. I don't like to download or use others tactics so I will not just blindly replicate yours but will take the relevant information to build mine.
The first few games with the new tactic, I managed to get good possesion but was not able to score much. From the third game onwards with some minor tweaking it's looking good. Since I am at the start of a season, I am just playing the pre-season friendlies with weaker opponents. So it's difficult to say whether my tactics is good or not. I have arranged a friendly against Real Madrid (I am playing Liverpool) to see how my tactic will work against a good team.
Keep up the good work!!!
Cheers!
Ani

Great post mate ,something we can all understand in Laymans terms.
Of all the things youve said the one thing that stuck a cord with me was having the Team Mentalitiy set the same as the Individual Mentality of the player who would most benefit(passing, tempo ,key man)in that position.ie Attacking use 15 for both Team Mentality and AMC Mentality. This makes perfect sence to me.
Keep up the goodwork mate
