Tactics & Training Tips

It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default Breaking teams down?

Hi everyone,

Ive brought my team to success and have a very good squad. Obviously, the result of this is most teams playing really defensive against me.

Im findiing it really hard to beat teams that I should easily beat, I cant break them down, then I get hit on the counter. Ive tried using wwfan's Ro0 and cleon's approach - I found that individual mentality overides team. Neither really worked for me.

So im currently using my cb's and strikers on individual and the rest on team. I play 4-1-3-2 with a Dm, 2 wingers and a cm with farrow.

What do you suggest i do or rather what instuctions or methods do you do to break defensiive teams down without being hit on the counter?

Cheers

I usually find that the weaker teams against me will play a more direct style of football as they attack quickly on the break. By them sitting back i play a more attacking play but play with a short passing style and slow tempo. With a good team you should be able to use this effectively.

Another thing is that if they are say a couple of leagues below or even just one try attacking down the wings and getting the crosses in as they will be poor in the air. You do have to have to have strikers that are half decent at heading.

I usually play an attacking/slow/short game anyway. Just played aston villa who played a 4-1-4-1, defensive/counter attack with direct passing and i won 3-0 using your method. Next game, Sunderland set up exactly the same against me and i lost 2-1.

Do you use a target man? If you do try plaing the ball behind the defence by setting it to feed the target man with a run onto the ball.

Do you watch the matches aswell? this gave me greater understanding of what my team is doing in the game. even though thay may be playing fast and defensive i have actually found i have had to revert to the same tactic to beat them. Try and see where the weaknesses of the opposition is and expose them by tweaking in the tactics.

If you haven't already have a look at Cleons Sheff Utd Project which is great for informatiuon on tweaking.

yeh, i have read cleons sheffield project, he talks about going opposite to your opponent but do you think if yoiu are the better team you can match their style and outplay them at it?

It has turned out that way in quite a number of my matches. Cleon is right imo as i always play by this rule but if it isn't working during a match i change to match the opposition and have been the stronger team.

Weaker teams will try and park the bus in front of goal, counter you etc. Thus, by committing and overloading their box may result in a counter attack. You have two options, persevere and hope you break them down or force them to come out of their shell then attack them.

Agree with you there. I think thats why it works successfully especially against the weaker teams who may lack the pace to get back quickly.

By the way let me know how you get on Craggsy. would like to know if it worked for you or not

What was your scout report for the everton game? and how did you play it?

How do you watch the games? And always look at the match stats throughout as they are very important in telling you whether you should tweak a bit
