It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Its not direct linked to position, but its more linked to how often/early he will press forward, esp when you gets into possession of the ball.

The player mentality is also linked to his passing; whether to make a risky forward pass, or a safe backward pass.

If high mentality, the player will drop the defensive aspect, and concentrate on the attacking, and vice versa.

This is as much I understand from it. Still I would hope SI could give us more info, since I can not fully understand how it works. Actually, I think theres few who really can explain it

I also belive that mentality is linked with FWR as well as the other opposite position.

Hope this helps.

Cheers & Good Luck!

This is actually a really good question

I asked myself this question when starting tyo make tactics - are mentalities, and other team intructions based, or adjusted for that particular on position, or on the same scale?

the first thing to say is, each players in their respective position, set on default central sliders, will not behave the same. So even with sliders in the same position, the keeper for instance, won't make forward runs. The defenders wont make nearly as many forward runs as attackign players higher up the pitch.

So each position is certainly hard coded to a large extent.

I believe, through testing, this goes across the board for all the settings. Central defenders will not close down as much as midfielders. Wing backs will, by feault, make more forward runs than full backs. Attacking midfielders will attempt more through balls than defenders.

The exact adjustments made for each position which influence player behaviour would be fantastic to know - and would reveal a lot about players behaviour.

In practice, as far as I can establish, this means that moving sliders to extremes, would influence a player almost certainly in many negative ways and restrict his freedom of choice to a one dimensional approach.

For example, by default, a right winger will close down a fair amount. Increase this a little, and he closes down a lot. Increase it to a high setting, and all the guy is thinking about is closing down. Have you set a high closing down position and watched these attacking playters running all over the pitch out of position, neglecting their defensive duties? I have.

The same goes for any slider.

Have you also noticed how balanced, AI formations, are very effective? I suggest basing your own formations very close to defaults, and making small adjustments here and there, moving sliders in small amounts and with care. I have found it much more effective than the large increments I used in earlier formations.
