Tactics & Training Tips

It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default Atletico Madrid, team de la miserable

If you look at the player from Atletico Madrid in FM 2007 they have one of the strongest squads after Barcelona and Real Madrid in the La Liga. The most important players are Fernando Torres, Pablo, Maxi Rodriguez and Argentinian wonderboy Sergio Aguero.

I have recently started a game with Atletico and although my squad is great I just doesn't seem to be able to find the right tactic.

I have arranged a lot of friendlies to get as many time to make a good tactic but so far all of my tries failt big time.

Short passing and Slow temp, Quick Passing and Direct tempo I've honestly tried everything. But it just doens't seem to work.

As I saw a lot of you seem to be playing, of have been playing with Atletico. In the Atletico thread I saw some amazing results though no one is willing to help me.

A far as I know the best way to play with Atletico is in this formation:

Or this formation:

One defensive mid and one attacking mid. One quick striker with a lot of CF and one tall and a bit stronger striker.

How logical this all may sound I just does not seem te be able to find the right team and player intructions. In 7 friendlies I tried almost everything from full attack till high defensive till normal. But as I said it is not working at all.

So I ask you guys. How should I play with Atletico Madrid? What are the right team and player intstructions and what is the right formation.

Or is there maybe already a good working tactic for Atletico out there?

Feedback, tips or suggestians are welcome

Hi there i´m willing to help in what i can. Started recently new season with Atletico Madrid but like you i´m still playing friendly matches.
Before entering team/individual instructions let me give you some advices:
- sell RB Seitairidis (6M) and DMC Luccin (5.5M)because both have high wages and you should prevent red bank balance;
- don´t sell Perea, Antonio López, Pablo or any other defender...try to maintain important spanish players;
- don´t sell Maxi Rodréguez less than 20M or at least try to change with another player: Example: Maxi RodrÃ*guez for 15M and some nice DMC/MC. Same for Petrov, try to keep him because he´s top class.

Team

GK: Leo Franco
RB: Perea (more defensive); Juan Valera (more ofeensive);
CD: Pablo
CD: Zé Castro (Perea too at right side)
LB: Antonio López/Mariano PernÃ*a (free kick specialist)
MDC/MC: Costinha (buy another one after selling Luccin)
MC: Maniche/Gabi
AM R: Maxi RodrÃ*guez/Luciano Galleti
AM L: Martin Petrov/José Jurado (but you should go for another AM L more agressive and defender minded)
AM C: Aguero/Jose Jurado
ST: Fernando Torres/Mista

Formation

4x2x3x1 with Costinha and Maniche at MC position but Costinha with mentality < 10 (between 6-10 depending opponent and result). I put wingers like your image proves, with starting RM/LM position with forward arrow to AM R/L. Finally, play Aguero as AM C (free role) and if you need desesperatly to score goal give him attacking mentality (slider 14-16) or give him short forward arrow.

Atletico have good players: nice defense (don´t sell those spanish, they´re great), 2 skilled wingers and Aguero/Torres society. But, if you play 4x4x2 must times team will break at midfield and tactic will change to 4x2x4. Try playing more defensive minded, maybe ticking counter attack box and take more time to set individual instructions.

Later i´ll add more information. Hope it helps

21M should give you sufficient money to buy Quaresma (Oporto) and some other substitute for Petrov or Maniche, for example.

I could upload my tactic but believe doesn´t matter for helping you. Each case is a case and all depends on "x" variables, not only about formation. My suggestion is you should take time setting individually instructions, accordingly to team ones. More time at the beginning (friendly games), less time during the season. Finally another tip: watch first games at full time or at least extended to see if your team/players are performing well.

I´ll come back later. Cheers

i won the league first season with atletico too, quite easily actually, its a lot of fun as underdogs.
here is my starting formation:
gk: franco sub: bernabe
rb: valera sub: seiteridis
cb: pablo sub: perea
cb: eller sub: castro
lb: lopez sub: pernia
rm: miguel/guardado (sol maxi)
cm: maniche sub: costinha
cm: gabi sub: luccin(think im forgeting someone)
lm: petrov sub: jurado
st: aguero
st: torres(god) sub: mista
i had farrows on r/l back and r/l mid
played a quik tempo with direct play and defence sitting deep with low closing down
for me this is now my away tactic but in first season i used this all the time. if you want a screenie just tell me how to. i also had the counter attack box ticked
ps ze castro is a good dm too so no need to buy a replacement for luccin. hope this helps
