To me they are a necessary evil. I hate playing them, but like to have a couple pre season friendlies to check out new signings in a game environment, try out some different tactics and get some run into the squad's legs.

You are the Manager, and you see this bloke play out of skin against you. Ok, worth sending a scout around. Then you find out another club has put in a bid in for him.

As a Manager sometimes you have to go with your gut, and I think if I was in the same position as redwolf, I would of done exactly the same.

Opens up flood gates... :p
Leaving alone the initial question where I am just about in Taips camp here, I am, however very surprised our grammar police have not been here foaming at the mouth.

Sounds perfectly fine to me - ultimately it is your risk whether the player turns out to be a child prodigy or a complete donkey. I have no doubt at all that the same thing happens in real life sometimes - time waits for no man and if you see a chance to sign a player you have watched yourself then it is totally up to you.

I remember even in the Premiership, Blackburn signing a player their manager had never seen because it was too close to the transfer deadline to properly scout him. You pays your money, you takes your chance!

Friendlies: useful only for getting your first team up to match fitness in preseason. Best left to ass man.

Unfortunately I had an mental spasm a few seasons ago and arranged a tour. My ass man has sat pouting in a corner ever since and refuses to book friendlies for me.

I've noticed a few posts talking about boosting a smaller team's reputation by arranging friendlies with them. Any evidence this works? I thought you could only improve reputation by winning stuff.

Signing him was indeed a gamble but so far it seemed like a gamble well worth taking. Best performer in my team at the end of my first season and supporters player of the year! Now if only my other players could do perform like that...

Oh, and thanks everyone for your comments. You chaps ain't as bad as what I have read on the other sub forums. At least so far...
