All the other poofs make valid points, but it could also be a lack of power - if you've put all your gubbins in the same case you had before, I'd say it was sure to be this or cooling. Get yourself a new PSU.

When it's about putting a coolant on your processor: use Arctic Silver. There's absolutely no need to save money on that by using some crap like silicon.

Also, you might want to download a speed fan monitoring tool first, and check if it's really the processor overheating. (usually it displays the temperature, and shows some nifty graphs as well).

Last but not least: if you don't have an idea, get someone who does. You can ruin a lot, and you don't want to.

Hmm. I've got the temperature monitored so it's not that. Updated chipset drivers without success. Now I'm torn between using the WinXP repair function or flashing the BIOS.

The repair option rarely lives up to its name and usually leads to a reformat/reinstall. But the BIOS update could shred my mainboard and might not fix anything. Arse.

If there are BIOS updates around - use them. I've never ever had an update go wrong.*



*Any BIOS updates it done at the user's own risk, and it's their own silly fault for listening to me if an update goes wrong. But then that's what you get for asking for advice on a forum and not from a paid IT Professional**
