We seem to have spent a lot of time discussing FM06's transfer moves, we've spent a lot of time making claims as to what we think is and isn't realistic. So in the interests of a fair and balanced debate, heres one RL story that seems to backup FM06's transfer moves.
Chelsea at the tribunal PLEASE NOTE that the article names players, so to keep it pure I'll summarise the story quickly. Chelsea signed 3 youngsters for their youth academy and offered the clubs concearned (Bristol Rovers, Stockport and Gillingham) a "reasonable" fee. That fee got increased to approximately £2.5m for the trio after a football league committee decision.
Okay so 3 youth players who may never make it to Chelsea's first team are worth £2.5m... but the story continues
Gillinghams dream As a player is named I'll summarise this one quickly. Gillingham seem a little annoyed about Chelsea getting this player on the cheap, so they've taken the unusual step of publicising the financials of the deal. Original deal was £25K upfront, £25K after 6 months, then £400K if the player made 40 appearances. FA committee awarded them £125K for the player (no mention in the article if there are further additional payments). And finally Gillinghams chairman believes that if said player makes 40 appearances they should be entitled to £32m.
I accept this quick example deals with L1 and L2 teams, and not the EC(S/N) junk we laughingly call players... but it does highlight that big teams will throw money around to secure what looks like longterm talent.
Just my tuppence on the subject.
