I'd think a big club would only be willing to pay way over the odds if there's competition from other clubs for the player's signature. Apparently in FM (even if it hasn't happened in my own save), a club just comes along and throws a huge sum at you without trying first to get him cheaper, and without other clubs lined up for the same player.

If a conference player really is looked at being the next big thing for England he may be worth a lot of money for some clubs, but the player would create a lot more buzz first.

Hmm, I think you're right.

And I'm sure real life bids would be designed as Ian described rather than a bulk sum being offered right there and then. The FM versions are flawed in this aspect of the game, especially if you think how cash-strapped most Championship and Premiership level clubs are in reality.

I think the finances become unrealistic in the game after a few years anyway (basically everyone becomes rich), so you possibly have to move your goalposts accordingly.

I find transfer fees to be a lot more realistic in the early stages of a game.

For example, in my TNS game, Aberytswyth bid £500k for one of my players

That's interesting. I tend to stay out of GQ, but for ealier versions I've seen posts of long-term holiday games where they investigated certain aspects of realism, especially finances. I haven't seen anything like this for FM06 (well, I didn't look). Is this the general concensus now, that clubs get rich too easily?

I think so. Although I am talking about 05, not 06.

Checked the status in my save in March 2012.

8 rich clubs, 5 secure, 6 okay and 1 insecure. Looks like you're right Phil.

FM05 was the exact opposite of CM0304 in terms of finances. There are no bankrupt clubs at all, whilst almost every Conference and Third division club was bankrupt after a few years under CM0304.

The way things are going, I would say that 03/04's model is more realistic...

ok the actual deal was

500k straight up, 100k after 10 league games, 150k over 12 months.

also 15% of the next fee and a friendly.

I chose to accept because I wanted the money to go into the actual bank balance, I only have 200k of it to spend which I am happy with - will now ask for my wage budget to be increased (would rather have more wages than cash - but thats a different debate)

No need to justify it to us, ex-Crouchy I'd, and most of the others, have done exactly the same.

We may be LLaMas...but we're greedy LLaMas
