I used to sign many players and staff by typing "no club" in the search engine in FM2005 but this facility seems to have disappeared in FM2006 being full of referee's and a handful of retiree's. Anyone got a solution or the new 'search' name as I need those 17-20 year old's (and 30+ for experience) to be successful.
Oooops (to me). I just looked at the guidelines and apparantly I was being a fraction overzealous... here is an excerpt from the guidelines:
The Search Screen.
Some LLaMa’s use the search screen to shortlist players in their area and then send off their scouts to find out how good a player he really is. Other more zealous LLaMas avoid this screen entirely letting their scout do the job for which he was hired ie: finding players. Signing “known” players is a big no no. Known players are ones that are known to you through outside influences, or have been signed and performed well for you in previous games of CM. Regardless of what you tendency is with the Search Screen, no player should ever be signed unless he is first given the once over by one of your scouts.
Still, the way you are planning to use the 'search' function is 'pushing it'
There have been lots of debates on this forum regarding the use of filtered player searches for transfer listed and loan listed players or youngsters released by top clubs.
Some people may see them as "grey" areas, but I am yet to be convinced that these lists exist in real life in similar form to a player search.
Recently released players? That's a bit too much. I'm partial about looking at players that are listed for loan or transfer. Seems realistic that you would have access to that information given that clubs want everybody to know if they want to loan out a player. The thing that sucks about it however is that FM gives you way more information about the players than you could get from a transfer list (Incidentally, I believe the FoW is way too loose and needs to be more tightly linked to scouting and not always reveal attributes correctly after just one scouting). Theoretically, if you would use the search screen for that, you should send the scout out to ANYBODY on the list you can afford and definitely not look at their attributes first! It's easier to just avoid it altogether.
Personally I don't search for transfer listed players, but I've scouted players before after filtering for players listed for loan, especially early on in the game with a tiny squad and less than adequate shortlist.
