I know I'm new here and all, but with '06 doesn't this grey area become less so? My scout has recommended a number of loanees on his travels.

Ok, some of them weren't realistic targets, and others (as is usual with these scouts) were crap, but surely, this being the case, scouting has to be the only legitimate way to search for players, even if it does mean that the range of players available to us is reduced considerably...

I was under the impression that the "search" feature does not list everyone... it only lists players with enough of a reputation that you would have heard of them (no obscure players, local players if you are local, etc.)

Isn't it realistic to say that I was sitting there trying to think of players to sign and remembered reading in the local paper about a Cambridge youth program graduate who had always been a fan of my team... so I consult with my assistant manager to see if he's ever heard of him and if he thinks they're a realistic signing and then send a scout after him?

If your intent is to make things hard on yourself then, by all means, don't ever, ever, ever use the search feature... if your goal is realism then cutting yourself off from the search feature completely seems kind of silly

All of this is said with the presumption that fog of war is checked...

No, it isn't realistic. I read the local paper here in Exeter most evenings, and I have NEVER read any youth team graduate saying that XYZ was his favourite club.

And, no doubt, if you employ your method, the player which "springs to mind" just so happens to be an uber player in the future.

The reason why we use scouts and scouts only is so that we don't suddenly "remember" that player from a previous save which went on to bigger and better things.

i suppose i never have that problem because i never use existing players unless i'm doing a challenge for some reason...

so my knowledge base NEEDS to be filled in...

I can see the logic if you're always using real players... the scouting restriction makes sense in that instance...

also... i find it odd that in england there aren't constant stories about local teams and local youth teams... Both the Orlando Sentinel and the Raleigh News & Observer (the newspapers I'm familiar with) run two or three stories a week about high school soccer players (our equivalent of youth teams)...

Is it not like that overseas?

Local teams (i.e. Exeter City , Tiverton Town - yes). The minor leagues - basic game reports and league tables. Certainly nothing about the school leagues and youth teams. We don't have the same emphasis on high school sports over here as the States do.

laxrulz777, you're correct to an extent, in that FM is designed with the assumption that the search screen reflects what a manager might realistically know about famous players in his region. But LLaMas have generally concluded that this is in fact not realistic and that a manager would not know quite so many players and even a portion of their attributes.

There are many ways that real life managers get their information about players, including methods that go well beyond relying on scouts, but FM doesn't currently offer any features to really reflect this. So, in the interest of making the game challening and possibly maintaining a better level of realism, LLaMas generally avoid the search screen entirely and rely solely on scouts. And, personally, I've found that this doesn't really hamper you anyway. You still find good players to help your team.

The in-game equivalent for this to me is media news items, not the players search screens. If I get a news item about some reserve team player winning a man-of-the-match, then I may send a scout to look at him. This, I feel, captures the spirit of 'local newspaper' reports.

It is pretty clear that you do not want to play entirely by the LLM guidelines, what should be even more obvious is that no matter what argument you put forward the guidelines will not be changed to suit you.

You bought the game play it whatever way you want! The main thing is to enjoy it.

i was under the impression that the overriding goal of the "LLM way" was realism... In that respect I've always played by the rules...

As for the guidelines not being changed... My perception is that they've been changed quite a bit over time (SWYCT -> Scout your borders, How to search for coaches, How to search for loan targets, etc.)... It seems fairly arrogant to think that this current iteration is the be all end all... If I can contribute something substantive then great... if not then that's fine too...
