As for Steve Cotterill, yes, he did an excellent job with Cheltenham, taking them from the Dr Martens league to Division 2 in something like 6 seasons.

5 seasons.
Obviously being a Cheltenham fan, I follow Cotterill's career with a little bit of interest.
To be honest, he wasnt doing that bad a job at Sunderland. The reserves were 5th when he was sacked.
And he did a better job than you suggest at Stoke. They were top of the bottom half when he left for Sunderland. Tony Pullis manage to pull a team from the brink of relegation that he had put there himself. Ofcourse, if Cotterill stayed put they wouldn't have been involved in a relegation battle. I'd imagine it was a bit of a kick in the teeth for Stoke.
He's a very ambitious manager and I challenge you to find me a quote where he preached loyalty. Infact, the Stoke board commented on his ambition to get to the top. They just didnt bank on him being so ambitious that he'd be Howard's number 2. What he did was a disgrace though.

Yes, Stoke were 14th when Cotterill left, but with 2 wins from 14 games and a chronic lack of goals, it was a position they shouldn't really have been in.
Dave Kevan then took over as caretaker, and whilst he is a very good coach, he's no manager and his time in charge saw Stoke slide right down.
Pulis took over a team with no confidence and bottom of the table. Whilst it did take him some time to get things moving, Stoke were one of the top form sides once their 6-1 thrashing at Forest was done, hence their escape.
His very first interview for the local paper, The Sentinel was the one where he preached hard work and loyalty. Obviously no longer have a copy, but I remember it well.
