Guy Roux is legend, talk about patience:

From Uefa.com

quote:
History: AJ Auxerre
Founded in 1905 as the Association de la Jeunesse Auxerroise by an abbot named Deschamps, Auxerre waited nearly 90 years for their first major success when they finally lifted the French Cup in 1994. And if that was a sweet moment for their fans, and especially their legendary coach Guy Roux, better was to come two years later when they won the league and cup double.

Modest beginnings
Until that flurry of glory Auxerre's record had been modest indeed. They won the cup competition in the Burgoyne district in 1950 (the same year they renamed their stadium as the Stade de l'Abbe-Deschamps following the death of their founder) but it took them another 20 years to make it into the national league.

Roux appointed
The seeds of this transformation had been sown in 1963 when Guy Roux was appointed player/coach. A quick learner, Roux guided the team to promotion to the third division of the national championship in 1970 and another promotion - to the second division - followed in 1974. Then, five years later Auxerre reached their first French Cup final, which they lost against FC Nantes Atlantique after extra time.

Upward curve
However, Auxerre remained on an upward curve and in 1980 they won the second division title and in their first season in the top flight finished a creditable tenth. Subsequent seasons - boosted by star players such as <snip> - saw them consolidate their position and make their early forays into Europe. In the 1989/90 season they reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup before losing to AC Fiorentina and three years later were only denied a place in the final after losing a penalty shoot-out in the semi-final against BV Borussia Dortmund.

Historic double
It now seemed only a matter of time before Auxerre would win a major trophy and success finally arrived in 1994 when they lifted the French Cup after beating Montpellier Hérault SC in the final. However, this was just the hors d'oeuvres for in 1996 Auxerre - a city with a population of just 40,000 - left behind the more celebrated FC Nantes Atlantique, Paris Saint-Germain FC and AS Monaco FC - to win not only their first French league title but also seal a historic double in the French Cup final against Nîmes Olympique SC.

European adventure
Their first appearance in the UEFA Champions League in 1996/97 saw Auxerre reach the quarter-finals before being knocked out by BV Borussia Dortmund. More recently the club has been unable to repeat that form, suffering a slump in the league. However in the 2001/02 season they once again challenged for honours and a third-place finish in Le Championnat ensured they qualified for another tilt at the UEFA Champions League.

He hasn't just managed ManU and Aberdeen, there's St Mirren for one.

I doubt if even Fergie could take East Stirling to the top.

From what I can remember from his book, he was only at East Stirling for a few months, taking them to the top of the table (3rd out of the 3 divisions IIRC) before having a better offer at St. Mirren. He was actually sacked by St.Mirren after various disputes with the board.

His argument was that a club like East Stirling could never become a club like St.Mirren, and that a club like St.Mirren could never become an Aberdeen.

I'm sure some people would take a similar career route, but is 'jumping ship' a true LLM path?....hard to say really.

John Toshak and Swansea ? Took them from the fourth to the first although they only survived in the first for a few seasons. If i can remember that far back they had a good first season in the first but trailed off - not really getting the large numbers of supporters needed to become a big club.

I just can't understand the thinking behind pmyraje. He obviously can't grasp the whole concept of LLM, particularly in the real life environment. A good manager is measured in the success he brings, whether it be European Cups and countless Premier League titles to manure or whether it be taking a non league club up through the leagues. It's managers that get gifted top jobs (best example Ruud Gullit - won Chelsea a trophy but was a spectacular failure afterwards) who definately don't do it the LLM way.

Fergie took one of the three clearly defined LLM routes and ended up one of the greatest ever managers (take off your anti-ManUre glasses and you may see this )

Top man. Torn-faced bugger, but top man anyway.

Our very own Sven-Goran Eriksson?

He started right down in the depth of Swedish non-league football (aged 27 or something?), and moved his way up to Gothenborg, doing very well in Europe with quite small team, before going to Benfica and then Lazio... Quite impressive...

Guy Roux is an exceptional example though - how old is he now? Unbelievable loyalty and patience, I'd like to hear the job offers that have come in over the years!

As for Steve Cotterill, yes, he did an excellent job with Cheltenham, taking them from the Dr Martens league to Division 2 in something like 6 seasons.

5 seasons.

Obviously being a Cheltenham fan, I follow Cotterill's career with a little bit of interest.

To be honest, he wasnt doing that bad a job at Sunderland. The reserves were 5th when he was sacked.

And he did a better job than you suggest at Stoke. They were top of the bottom half when he left for Sunderland. Tony Pullis manage to pull a team from the brink of relegation that he had put there himself. Ofcourse, if Cotterill stayed put they wouldn't have been involved in a relegation battle. I'd imagine it was a bit of a kick in the teeth for Stoke.

He's a very ambitious manager and I challenge you to find me a quote where he preached loyalty. Infact, the Stoke board commented on his ambition to get to the top. They just didnt bank on him being so ambitious that he'd be Howard's number 2. What he did was a disgrace though.

Yes, Stoke were 14th when Cotterill left, but with 2 wins from 14 games and a chronic lack of goals, it was a position they shouldn't really have been in.
Dave Kevan then took over as caretaker, and whilst he is a very good coach, he's no manager and his time in charge saw Stoke slide right down.
Pulis took over a team with no confidence and bottom of the table. Whilst it did take him some time to get things moving, Stoke were one of the top form sides once their 6-1 thrashing at Forest was done, hence their escape.

His very first interview for the local paper, The Sentinel was the one where he preached hard work and loyalty. Obviously no longer have a copy, but I remember it well.

Ah, Guy Roux. He took route one for LLM, took over a team and stuck with it for 40 years.

Good call, Merk.
