Also keep in mind that a low detail level in the game can help you speed things up.
I'm curious though why you want answers to these questions? If they are relevant to your machine, then people can offer more advice if you post your specs.
Good luck gaming anyhow | ok here's my specs:
Celeron 2.2GHz, 736MB RAM thats it yer?

As for amount of leagues, I usually advise people to let FM decide. When you start a new game there is a button labelled "recommended setup". If you click it the game will automatically choose the best setup of amount leagues for your machine.
DB size is really down to personal preference. But as you seem to be looking for a quick game I would recommend the small databse. If you try that but still wouldnt mind the game to be slighly slower choose medium for the next game.
Also remember to adjust the detail level in the preference screen once you've started a game |

well i've clicked 'recommended setup' and it recommended english league 2 and above and scottish division 3 and above with a small database. but i'd rather do english league 2 and above with a medium database but when i did that the game was unbelieveably slow.

| It means exactly what is says. Of course you can disregard it, but the game will then run slower than "intended".

In that case I would seriously consider getting a new machine |

Mitja, performance becomes a big issue when you load a lot of leagues. Why load a league when you have no intention of playing in it?

I have no intention to play in spain or italy but I always select them next to some other leagues in order to keep the Champions leaugue a challenge.
Its up to you to decide when the game becomes slow and to find a balance between number of leagues and overall game speed.
Gl !
