I was planning on using a direct 4-4-2, with Mickey Evans as the targetman to head, but I may well be tempted to give this a go.
Couple of questions;
1; I find Farrows on the fullbacks to be, usually, suicidal. How many do you concede on average, especially from balls out wide?
2; Centre backs have very high closing down (team) - is this intentional?
| Some Decent questions. The main reason I use the farrows on the full backs is because I have faith in the center halves and holding midfielder.
Its just something I prefer , If a forward is running and a defender , I want him to deal with it early , and start an attack. Its all up to you about that. Its an attacking formation.
As with Torquay. Firstly I'd get the patch to get a more up to date squad. But if your using th 7.0.0 database , then use Buster Phillips wide left , Ward wide right , and try and bring in a forward with a bit of pace to partner Thorpe. Although McPhee plays way too well on that game. And If you find yourself in a bit of money , sign Chris Templeman , only 25k I think. Hes tall , and a good finisher of the ball.

Right;
First friendly, at home v Dawlish (the game set me up with games against Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea Reserves, Coventry and Southampton, but I cancelled all bar the Coventry game because I don't think its good for morale to be battered in preseason )
Won 2-1, with Jamie Ward (FRC) scoring on 2 minutes, them equalising on 6, and Lee Mansell (MLC) scoring an injury time winner. Not too impressive, you might think, but we should have had a hatful - 13 shots to their 3, of which only 4 were on target. We also managed to finish on 58% possession, which is probably the highest I've seen on FM07.
Coventry next.

I'm playing on 7.0.1 - never saw the need to update to 7.0.2 really.
Team wise, I've got Abbey in goal, Andrews at Right Back, Reed left back, Taylor and Villis in the middle, Hockley as the defensively minded midfielder, Motteram/Mansell as the attacking minded midfielder, Murray on the right and Buster on the left, with Evans and Ward up front.
Templeman is a good shout, I was looking at Duncan Ferguson, but he's not interested. Probably a hangover from my usual direct tactics anyway |

| The Torquay Side are pretty rubbish. So I wouldn't take much from not scoring. The actual Torquay team haven't scored much this season.

Aye, I know
Drew 1-1 with Coventry, fighting back to level terms on 78 minutes. I now see why you call it 'Crash the net' - Woods picked the ball up in our half of the centre circle and played it wide right for Jamie Ward (who played as a winger in the second half). He took it into the box, and there were 4 players ready to score. Simple ball inside, and Mathisen, the attacking CM, scored.
They, as you would expect, bossed it on chances and possession, but the result was certainly encouraging. Going to look for a striker with a bit of pace, because I think Ward offers a lot more out wide.

Yep, I like this - certainly the style of football.
Third friendly, another win, Beating Lymington & New Milton 2-1. Their only shot on target went in, while we were so very wasteful - in fact, I was glad when Motteram was tackled on the edge of the box late on, allowing McPhee a tap in for the winner - Motteram's long shooting is woeful. Hopefully the striker problems will be sorted though - I've just blown my remaining £10k transfer budget on Chris Templeman.
Again we bossed it on possession etc.

Lost the first game of the season 3-2 to Notts County thanks to some defensive mistakes.
Second game - Torquay 5 - Chester 5. Incredible game - we were wonderful going forward, and woeful at the back. Decided to try and stop this by adjusting the D-Line down to 11, and putting closing down on the centre backs down to 4. Also trying barrows on the two centre backs.
I don't want to tweak too much, and take away from the tactic going forward, but I can't cope with conceding this number of goals!

Maybe you should take off the farrows for the fullbacks. I find that against most 4-4-2 teams, their wingers get behind the fullbacks alot. Usually I only put farrows on defenders if we're trailling by a goal and i'm going all-out kamikaze.

| The main problem with Torquay is that their defense is rubbish. I'm not terribly surprised you've shipped 8 goals. Its a case of trying to get a center half. Try Simon Grand if your stuck. He'll normally help you out.
But thats exactly what the tactic is designed to do. Score goals ; lots of them.

bobby, do you play like this every game or only when you need to score? as i play similiar football to you and am thinking about trying it against portsmouth from the start
| I play like it all the time. I've been searching for the 'perfect' football that Arsenal seem to play. And i think this is it. But you've got to sign the right type of players. I'd give it a go. I think you need quick wingers as the main thing. And someone creative in midfield , who can pass. </BLOCKQUOTE>
ok wicked mate i'll try it with england 2010 world cup 2nd group game well i'll try using the d-farrows
