Tactics & Training Tips

It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default Tight Marking

does anybody use this away from home?
seems everytime i use it on my central defenders their attackers just swivel and score.

I've found that "Tight Marking" should be renamed "Defensive Suicide". I found this to be extremely effective in FM06, and FM07 (pre-patch). However, since the first patch, I've noticed attackers getting free of their marker very easily, and my tackle success rate dropped dramatically.

As a general rule, I say ignore it - unless you've found a way to get it to work extremely effectively.

I think I shall rephrase my comment.

Since the first patch, I have struggled with Tight Marking. Before the first patch, and all previous versions of CM and FM I never really had the need to tinker with tactics. I could build a solid tactic - give minimal individual instructions, and occasionally adjust mentality if defending a lead against a great team, or chasing a lead against a weak team.

The first patch appeared to render my quick, direct style of game completely useless, so I started to look at the tactical side of the game in far more depth - I had always enjoyed success in previous versions with the same style of tactic.

As a result of me paying more attention to detail, tactically, I've found myself giving a lot more individual instructions. Furthermore, I now am more inclined to build tactics specific to the strengths of the squad I inherit, instead of trying to bring in players hwo compliment my pre-arranged tactics. With these things in mind, it is quite plausible that the way I'm building tactics currently makes "Tight Marking" a no-go.

use tight marking only when you are playing a high tempo direct game with high closing down.

When playing with a slower tempo it is not applicable.
