Tactics & Training Tips

It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default [Theorem] Mentality vs Passing + Attributes

Hi all

Some of you might remember me (wwfan, asmodeus, cleon, and so on). Unfortunately, last few months i was aware of forum discussion due to less time (masters degree). But, now i´m active again and ready to debate tactical issues.

For those who remembering me, i was the author of some past approaches: Defensive Line, Closing Down and Marking and debated aspects relative to Players Personality Guide and Targetman, Playmakers and Freerole.

Last days i read Tactical Theorems and Frameworks '07 by wwfan and seems Rule of Two is now old-fashioned. For my own experience (Werder Bremen 4x4x2 diamond, for example) i did quite well: bundesliga title and champions league semi-finals.

So, i want to ask how forumers deal with mentality (individual instructions) and with passing choices.

My new project is Atl. Madrid 4x2x3x1 or 4x3x3 defensive and i still believe in Rule of Two, with few changes. More important is how you combine all individual instructions (closing down, marking, passing, others) with mentality. Other important issue is that i don´t keep to focus with home/away predictions. Normally, when playing away i reduce mentality slider -1, play a bit more narrow, slow tempo/wasting time and sometimes tick counter attack box.

My approach (home) is oriented to:
* (mentality slider between [])

GK - Leo Franco (6)
WB R - Perea (7)
DC - Pablo (4)
DC - Zé Castro (5) closing down high, just a bit higher on the pitch
WB L - Mariano PernÃ*a (7)
DMC - Costinha (9)
DMC/MC - Maniche (11)
AM R (right) - Martin Petrov (13)
AM L (left) - Martin Petrov (13
AMC - Serguio Aguero (15) Free Role
ST - Fernando Torres (17) Target man/play mixed

I wil add more information later about team and player instructions. Now, i ask for some advise related to passing attributes. For my own experience, when i check players stats i do the following:

Pass > 15/16
First Touch - no more than 12
Technique > 14

You should consider give direct pass for that player

Other scenario (+/- identical):

Pass > 15/16
First Touch - no more than 12
Technique < 12

Passing slider mixed (between 6-10) because this kind of player don´t have technique to make direct/long passes.

Another one:

Pass - around 10-14
First Touch > 16
Technique - around 10-14

This means player have attributes to play first touch football (passing slider lower then 4). He can react quickly and make one of most difficult thing in football: receive, pass and run (off the ball).

If, for example, pass and technique were not so good, then he can still play short pass but increase slider until mixed if you want (no more than 8 however).

What your suggestions about this? Do you have some kind of table/studie with passing stats versus slider choices? (first touch, short, mixed, direct, long).

Finally question: what is the real importance of stats like balance, natural fitness and agility?

Thanks in advance :p

i think its the team mentality that influences the passing to me.

i like to play possession football so i have my team mentality set to about 8 or 9 with the majority of players on short passing and have individual mentalities set to how i want them to line up on the field!

of course i always look for players with the 3 stats you mentioned, the higher the better, but it doesnt necessarily dictate how i set up the passing for each player! for instance i always have my fullbacks playing direct passing even if theyre the best rb/lb on the game with over 15 on passing and technique because i found that they would play too many square passes to a cd and even if the pass is spot on! it would get cut out by the attacker giving them a one-on-one chance all to often! the same goes for my wingers but to a slightly lesser extent!

i have all middle players to pass short but my cds to 1 or 2 notches on mixed giving them the option of a longer ball if under pressure!

as for balance/natural fitness/agility?! i usually ignore them tbh! although i believe balance is to do with how your player runs with the ball and agility is how slippery they are

I use Global Team setting both for Passing and Mentality.

Not quite sure but i believe when some player got >15/16 first touch, he´ll be able to play one touch football. This way, why not setting passing slider between 1-3?

My main doubt relates when to choose between mixed/direct (forget long). In what occasions you considerer give player direct pass? And based in what stats?

Need more insight please
