Tactics & Training Tips

It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default F****ing slump!

During the second seasons FM makes me want to break my PC. I mean it is really hard not to think the PC cheats when you play to draw games having 12-13 shots on goal and the opposition having one. The value of the players on my team is about 10 times of the value of any mid table teams in my league. No matter what tactics I use I just can't perform consistently. I'v read the theorems and frameworks. I really doub't that "supergoalie" is caused by the number of easy saves. I mean my players hit posts or get robbed most of the time. Someone please give me CONCRETE advise on how to deal with this SH*T. It's getting to the point where the game frustrates me!

I tend to use the default 442 when I hit a slump- as its a fairly mixed tactic it seems to let the players sort it out.

So George how long do you use this 442 for before back to your usual formation? Just the once?

ive just had a really bad 2nd season as west ham too!

i put it down to the outrageous fixture list i had, playing all the top teams at the start of season mixed with the tougher away games against more managable opposition then by the time that set of fixtures were over my team were all unhappy at not being top of the league and it was a struggle for the rest of the season!

i couldnt quite get that consistancy back that got me 5th 1st season and i even had a supporters group rallying against me!! but i just kept faith with my team and stopped giving them a hard time, praising them for less impressive results like drawing at home vs a poorer team! they responded in the end!

although i only managed 11th it could have been 7th if i hadnt lost my last 2 games of the season both away but amidst all this on the brink of getting sacked i managed to sustain a great uefa cup run and ended up winning it against man u at old trafford of all places too!

so in short keep the faith and start praising your team more and maybe just maybe you may get out of it! otherwise start a new game and try again!

LOL There is something about the Second Season that irritates one to hell.

What I do is I turn on Assistant manager takes care of Team Talks, and play conservative football. With my players on the ball most of the time, I can easily get them to pass the ball more accurately and calmly.

I am Inter, so you can expect us to thrast teams 5-1 and 3-0 even with Defensive Mentality.

Do care to check if you have players with low or high flair. Players with flair are more likely to win you games in adversities and eventually help the team morale.

GH.

Well I have been using the 4-3-3 tactic with HUGE success. I won the season with 9 points ahead of 2nd place. My approach was direct/ quick counter attacking with a deep defensive line. I have 2 games left this season. Im currently in 5th place. My first game is agains league winners and 2nd game is against 3rd place. So next seasons european football is on the line. Do I want to experiment with a different formation while playing 4-3-3 all season? If not will 4-3-3 be a good formation for slow tempo possession football? My squad quality is top in the league and moral is good-super. Moreover will teams open up next season since I didn't win the league? Is "2nd season slump" a "once in your career" phenomenon or is sure to happen after every league title?

Well, I tend to leave it until morale is up and then I eventually end up tweaking the hell out of it again back to what I had before (which is normally a short, slow tempo game).

It just seems the change seems to knock you out of the slump and get you going again, but you can then go back to your normal tactics.

Never tried 433 myself- but I suppose you could try the default 433, as I only use the default 442 because thats what I play.

Might have to give that a try as my Palace side after several good seasons in the top 7 and a UEFA cup win are having a mare- even though Ive got a pretty talented squad.

So is defensive mentality the key to possession football? I always thought slow tempo and short passing was and my stats are very good with over 60% possession and 70% plus pass completion, but I do find I draw too many games as I fail to break teams down.

Do you find that defensive mentality means you create better chances as your team are even more patient?

Precisely!

The team will always try to score, no matter how defensive you are. Defensive mentality helps defend the ball more and work around the opposition. MIND YOU, that having often 'time wasting' will severely decrease your chances of scoring goals, and will increase time between goals scored. So keep that in mind and GH.
