In my 2 latest (perhaps 9th/10th) attempt a succeeding with Blackburn Rovers I've been having huge problems stopping the AI getting loads of chances at goal. I myself get plenty of chances at goal, but becuase the opposition are getting so many too (a good balance of good and bad chances for me and the AI) I end up throwing away many games and the second worst goals against in the league.
I'm (atm) playing 442 and am using my own little combination of Cleon's and wwfans theories, with a defensive (away) and attacking (tactic) with the individual mentalities outlined in wwfans work. I play everyone on global passing (except the gk) and adjust passing, tempo and width in accordance with Cleons ideas in his Sheff Utd thread.
I think that closing down is the issue and always have my wingers/stikers on high closing down and my defenders on low closing down. My CM's are on global CD which is high in my defensive tactic and high in my attacking one.
I use tight marking when defensive and loose when attacking (though back 4 is always tight).
I've considered turning one CM to a DM but I think this will leave my other CM isolated in possession.
Lots of detail there (I think) so I hope people can just throw in some ideas as to why the AIget's so many chances.
If your defenders are good at marking, you may try to use man marking for them instead of zonal. Worked for me. You can also give barrow to one of your MC (presumably, with better defensive attributes) to make him help defenders more.
Well, I play in Italy, and there are lot of teams using different formations. Basically all my 4 defenders are on man marking instruction, and I usualy play a little deeper defense line (6-7). However, my FB are allowed to close down more often (12-14), while CDs close down rarely (5-6). Oh, and I play with DM, who is on zonal marking and closing down about 14. So in you case I would give one of the MCs barrow to use him as DM when you defend. My theory is that once the opposition gets the ball, all their FCs and/or AM(LRC) are covered (some of opposite AMs usually help defense, so they are not immediate danger). DM and wingers press the opposition to make pass quickly (higher Closing Down), but since attackers are covered there is a good chance that my defenders will intercept the pass. Even if they cannot intercept, they do not allow attackers drop into space. And DM covers the most dangerous zone in the middle, so I see my players double-team the opposite players quite often.
Ok, I do not want to say this is the solution of your problem. It works for me, but may not work with your team. For instance, if your play attacking tactic, the approach may have to be adopted to make sure you don't have gaps between lines. Also it may take a few matches for your defense to adapt to new settings if they are very different from what your have, so do not jump to conclusion right away.
