While I agree the 4-2-4 formation is rather silly, I can usually cope with it using a 4-2-2-2 defensive formation. Anyway, since I'm usually playing with a sweeper, I've recently tried going 1-5-1-2-1 (sw, 3xdc, dr, dl, dmc, mr, ml, fc) and it seems to work alright. My biggest problem with this game is that it doesn't seem to rely on 'real' tactics, but more on number crunching. These days it seems more like a mathematician's game. I know it does affect the game when you have tall defenders marking tall forwards compared to midgits marking giants, but still. It seems, at least to me, somewhat unrealistic that changing a slider here and there 1 or 2 steps can turn the game around completely. What I'd prefer is a lot more ways to interact with the players through personal instructions. Like telling your fast wingers to repeatedly try to get past the slow defender, or telling your forwards to either come deep or constantly try to beat the offside trap - I know this is already possible to some extent, but being able to do it only pre-match or during halftime is not enough.
What I'm trying to say is that I think personal instructions given through 'orders' throughout the game and not a small change in sliders should be a decisive factor.

I have found the best way to counter a 424 is to mimic a real life scenario - get your forward line defending - try switching their mentality down below 1/2 way and set counter attack on
I generally dont use a low mentality on defenders as they are slow to build up the attack and look for safe passes rather than getting the ball to your key midfield playmaker etc

This re ranking ******** that people keep mentioning in the forum doesn’t exist in real life, most teams play the best 11 and generally don’t change tactics a great deal in real life, changing of tactics would be reserved for **** teams like Newcastle and Spurs for when they come up against a superior team, so why when you put your best team out in the game you get beat by a team that according to the stats couldn’t hit a barn door but with strikers with a rating of 7 they bang away all 4 shots on target into the back of the net and how can I being the mighty Boro start the season with wins over chelsea and arsenal by 3 clear goals get half way through a season and be 5 nil down to a future championship side in west ham??......anyone want to buy a copy of football manger 2007 from me the greatest champ manager of all time?

My away tactic works very well againgst the 4-2-4. I actually relish it.
We hit them on the break often and after scoring usually see the opposition immediately changing to a defensive formation. At which point i change to my home tactic and we see the game through.
Works a treat.

Let's hear more about your away tactic. What formation is it?

topic maker, the title is very right, the 424 is indeed a joke. moreso is when it is implemented.
sure i'd accept if chelsea revert to this if they are chasing the game.
but if i'm man u and am playing somebody like yeovil in the fa cup, there is no way that i'd expect them to go to a 424, even if they are down 2/3 - nil with 30/25 mins to go. there is no way that irl a manager would subject their team to the risk of further demoralizing their team and fans by going so excessively attacking and exposing the GK to a team notoriously better than them. crazy.

It seems like there are two problems with 4-2-4.
1. AI switches to 4-2-4 way too frequently compared to real life.
2. 4-2-4 is too effective when AI switches to it.
I think both are valid claims. I'm quite puzzled as to why SI decided to make AI use 4-2-4 so often as they do, because they must be aware 4-2-4 isn't used that often in real life...
