I am Bristol Rovers about to start my first season and am thinking of experimenting with a variation of passing throughout my team. Basically im going to try direct passing from the back, mixed in the midfield and short in the final third of the field, in the belief that build up play becomes more intricate further up the field. I have never tried this before and am wondering in particular how effective it will be with a league two side. Has anyone ever implemented this or tried something similar??? Would love to get some feedback.

Yes this is the standard for many players. wwfan suggests it in his Tactical Theories.
Personally I use all global, more for conveniance and flexibility, but I think there is more tactical logic to the method you suggest.

I always put my forwards on short passing, regardless of how I have the rest of my team. Forwards just giving the ball away to often pointlessly when passing is on mixed or even direct for them.

I tend to have a variety of passing styles, but this really depends on the kind of football you want to play and the players you have.
There is no one standard approach that can apply effectively for all teams. The style of passing you can adopt depends in great measure on the level of skill your players have. If you were to adopt direct passing with your defenders and their passing levels are an average of 10. Then you can expect to be hoofing aimless balls.
Passing and Trying through Balls are interlinked and if used with good teams they can be devastating. An example of what I do may help.
In my side I have 2 fullbacks who have good decisions and passing attributes of 14. They also cross well. What I like to do is to create killer passes from the back which my pacey strikers can exploit. To do this I set my fullbacks on direct passing and my wingers on short with NO TTB. The fullbacks have TTB on full. What happens is that my wingers close down the opposite number pass the ball back to the fullbacks and as the AI closes them down they ping a killer ball down the flanks to my pacey striker on the left who has been told to run with ball. This is a deadly attack.
I wouldn't be able to do this if:
A. My fullbacks had 10 -12 for passing and poor decisions.
B. My wingers were told to standoff.
Whether you use Global of individual is irrelevant. Its the instructions and the players you use that will affect the outcome of a match. Personally my passing is set to short with only the fullbacks on direct passing.

I use global, and wouldn't suggest you to use direct passing for DC's because they have poor passing attributes. It's useful only when you play on counter-attack.
