Hi Paulsgruff.

Check your profile e-mail. I have sent you a spreadsheet. Sorry, I do not have an opportunity to upload file. Could you please do it instead.

Thanks

For my 3 back tactic I thought about something like this

FC FC
AML AMR
MC(DM)
WBL WBR
CD CD
SW
GK

My last season I played 6 or 7 games with this tactic (though did not have actual SW in the squad) and it worked fine at least on defence side. AI was barely able to come to my box and was forced to shoot from distance. On attacking side thouggh I had some problems, i guess mostly due to a gap in the middle (or my settings were not very good). But then the player I used as the SW got injured for 2 months, and I did not feel I have another one to put there right away. So I switched back to 442 diamond.

The problem is that I still do not have SW in my squad atm. I do have a couple players who could possibly play there, but re-training will take time (as well as team adjusting to new tactic), and I feel that my current squad has finally adopted to my current tactic, so I am tempted to try and win everything next season. Most likely I will play one more season with my current 442 diamond, and then try something new.

Thankyou so much for going through the effort to do this. It works perfectly and saves so much time (especially if only a couple of attributes have changed due to training). Great stuff!

The following link is a download location for an XLS that will work out your players personal instructions for you: - created and submitted by kolobok.

XLS Download Link

Note: If you don't have Microsoft Excel, you can use Open Office (which is a well know totally free office package) to edit this file to create your instructions.

Ok, so I am beginning phase 2 of testing with this approach, in a differet league, again with what I feel is the worst team available. Seria A this time - I'm going to manage Messina. My last game was with Watford due to them being the poorest team in their division in real life, this time it is a mix of poor side and media prediction in game. Ascoli are currently in 20th in Seria A, Messina in 19th, however Messina have a media prediction of 20th as apposed to Ascloi's 13th in FM.

This time I'm going to go about it a little differently. I'm going to play a 3 season game, to see how successful and consistant this style of tactic is in a longer time span. I am also not going to sign any players what so ever in the first season (to reduce the possible effect a quality player could have on the overall teams starting ability). I am also going to focus a little more on team instructions this time around, as alot of people have asked me about them. I will add little comments on team instructions when I play against big sides, probably not about smaller sides unless something really strange happens in game and its worth commenting on.

After picking what I thought was my strongest line up, I went about figuring out player instructions. Thanks to koloboks great little spread sheet, it took me only 5 minutes to come up with these instructions:

[IMG]http://img514.imageshack.us/img514/6384/squadwq3.jpg[/B]

I will go back and re-enter all the attributes in January so cover for possible increases/decreases in certain areas due to training/aging.

So that's it. I shall start my game tonight, and I will post updates on how it's going and how I react to specific situations over the next few days as I get into the game.

kolobok - I have had an idea about how this could work for smaller sides based around league reputation. I believe that England's and Spain's top divisions are the highest rated playable leagues (both at 19 out of 20 - this number is found in the game editor under competitions and filtered to included all data). So there could be a way to compare your lower division players to the higher teams, by a simple comparison of standard out of 20 and then raising the values for player instructions by the percentage difference. I'm not sure if there is a way you could impliment an 'all results raised by *insert percentage difference between leagues*' into that spread sheet so all you have to do is enter the reputation of the league you are playing in, and then it would sort it out from there? Just an idea - I don't expect you to go out or your way to try this if it's complicated, just an idea I wanted to throw out there

To any mod - Is there anyway the link to the XLS spread sheet in the post about this one could be merged into the original post at the top? It is a highly useful addition that enables this method to be implimented with much less hassle? I would be very greatful if this could be moved (I don't actually know how to get in touch with a mod - hence my reason for asking here)

That's the picture from above, I got the coding wrong... again, lack of concentration. Sorry for the tripple post.

Hi Paulsgruff and Tancque ,

Glad it helps. As for the LL teams I have not played one yet, but Tancque has some ideas and might be able to develop something. Btw, I like Tancque idea to use some average squad stats to adjust settings. For instanse, if you manage a very strong team and according to your system all players should run with ball often, I would allow it to several players with the highest ratings only, setting the rest to mixed.

I also like an idea to use math approach to opponent stats. It is time consuming, but could be very useful especially in close games (no clear favorite, no usefull scout report, and hence no clear tactic choice). Of course, it depends on what you like in the game. Imo the best moments of the game are when you see that you gameplan works exactly how you thought it should.

Great topic, congrats

I always enjoy a mathematical approach setting individual player instructions (slider 1-20) reflecting the individual player’s strengths and weaknesses.

Just wanna ask why you choose those 5 attributes and not others? For example:

Tackling – Tackling + Anticipation + Bravery + Concentration + Positioning + Decisions

Why not Tackling + Bravery + Determination + Positioning + Composure + Work rate?

In other words, why based your logic on those stats? Is said on manual?

Either way, i´d like your theorem and agree with most points. I´ll give it a try with Atle. Madrid because i started new season recently. I´ll test on my next friendly games and give fedd-back later.

Hi and wellcome Myst

I think there is no ideal system just yet - it is work in progress. Paulsgruff created a system and it is a starting point. As he said in his first post, he welcomes ideas and suggestions. For example, I also feel that some attributes may be added to / excluded from calculation. Bring your ideas here, defend them , and I am sure they will be greatly appreciated.

Look forward to seeing your feedback.

Hi Myst_, I tried to base my ideas for which attributes to use on their importance to that specific area - for example tackling like you suggested. So I picked the attributes that I felt would give the defender the best chance to make a successful tackle when they attempted one - where as work rate would be more along the longs of how often they attempted to make a tackle. Composure maybe should also be in there, I didn't think of this, maybe technique too (if that relates to if a tackle is clumsy or not - it can be hard to tell EXACTLY what each attribute does at times)

My reasons were:
Tackling - Obvious, we are talking about tackling
Anticipation - Ability to judge what is likely to happen before it does - improving chances of a successful tackle
Bravery - Not afraid to attempt the tackle
Concentration - This was thought along the lines of watching the ball/how aware they are of what's going on around them/being alert at the most possible times
Positioning - Being in the optimal position to attempt a tackle with the least likelyhood of fouling (for example - not tackling from behind)
Decisions - Knowing when to tackle and when not to (linked with concentration)

Hopefully that answered your questions and gave you more of an insight into why I choose certain things, if you still don't understand fully or have any suggestions feel free to post them. Good luck with your Atl Madrid game

And yes, it is very much a work in progress as kolobok said, It was just a framework I felt had potential, specially when more people get involved with it, bringing in new ideas and improvements.

Hi Paulsgruff,

How is your progress with Messina? No need to post screenshots, just general feelings.

I have decided to try applying your approach to figure out what kind of passing style and tempo would fit for my squad. Currently I have build pretty decent team, and almost all my players are good enough to adopt quicker game without giving up too much chances. I think a combination of pace, acceleration, decision, off the ball, concentration, technique, stamina and work rate should give me an idea for tempo. Since tempo is not individual I am going to calculate average stat for each player, and then take average of this stat for all players to determine tempo (the higher stat the higher tempo). As for passing I am not sure yet about attributes, but mostly about how to interpret the result (should I go short or direct if the final stat is high?). I kind of like quick-direct combination, but still not sure high passing attribute means that player can make direct pass with higher chance of completion, because the manual suggests to play longer if your players are not good.
Any ideas would be very much appreciated.

Thanks
