Season 2015/16
The stadium was expanded at the start of the season, and we qualified for the Champions League with a 10-0 agg. victory over Monaco. I signed two strikers and a young winger in the summer, but lost one of my brightest stars to Man Utd. One of my new strikers was a £5m Brazilian, the only foreign player in my team. Domestically our form was patchy and inconsistent, and after 15 games we were in the relegation zone. We were very unlucky to be there though, as we lost so many games that we had completely dominated.
In the Champions League we cruised through our group, winning 5 of the 6 games. Eventually our league form picked up, but it was clear we weren’t a patch on the team we were last year. In January I sold the £4m midfielder I bought last year to Tottenham for £15m. Over the spring months a good run of victories allowed us to climb the table, but the highest we ever sat was 6th place. My Brazilian striker scored 8 goals in 7 games all season, as he spent most of the year back home in Brazil after massively disrupting the harmony in the squad.
In the Champions League we reached the Qtr Finals, eventually being beaten by Villarael. Losing our last two games of the season meant we could only manage an 11th place finish. Poor compared to last year, but not bad considering I had virtually no motivation all season. I decided that I needed a new challenge, and as I had seen out my contract I felt the time was right to hand in my resignation. I spent 11 happy seasons at Accrington, and left the club with a strong squad and in an excellent financial position.
