Season 2011/12
Stenhousemuir - Scottish Premier League
Board still wanted us to battle against relegation, but the fans wanted to qualify for Europe again. My own goal was to copy last season's 3rd place, and qualify for Europe.
A fair number of players came and went. Bought 8 players for 310K. 3 became regulars, and 2 appared more and more as the season passed by. Two quite promising youngsters. Sold 10 players for 925K. Only two of were regulars.
Had a very good start, and was leading after 8 games with 6-2-0. Then the topscorer last 3 season got injured for 5 months, and our very promising striker McPoof got injured for 2 months. This hit us hard, and we only won 1 of the next 11 games. Towards the end of the season with thinner fixture list form got back on track. Fought hard with Hearts for 3rd spot, and with Celtic for a brief period about 2nd. After beating Hearts twice in the close-season we ended 3rd with 65 points, 8 ahead of Hearts, 9 off Celtic and a massive 28(!) behind untouchable Rangers. They won with 6 games remaining. Stenhousemuir were ready for Europe again
We entered the EURO Cup in the 1st proper round unseeded, where we drew Dinamo Kiev. We were extremely lucky and beat them 4-2 both home and away, despite being heavily outshot by 42-19.
Got Athletic, HSV, So'ton and Udinese in the group stage. We didn't stand a chance, and only got a point at home to So'ton. Hopefully we'll do better next time around.
Did well in the Scottish Cup for once. Got Rangers in the semi-final. We played well, and in an even match Rangers scored the winner on overtime. Argh!
Scottish Premier League: 3rd P38 W20 D5 L13 74-53 P65
EURO Cup: Group stage: 5th P4 W0 D1 L3 2-8 P1
Scottish Cup: Semi-final. Rangers (N) (SPL) 1-2
League Cup: 3rd Rnd. Motherwell (A) (SPL) 1-3
I think we have established ourselves as the 3rd strongest team in Scotland now, although we perhaps need luck on the injury front to stay there. We're scoring enough, but if we are to challenge the Glasgow-duo we need to tighten up in the back and lose the erratic form spells. Hope we can close the gap somewhat next season.
Financially it was a great season. We made over 4M, and our bank account currently stands at close to 8M. Many of the team's indispensable players' contracts runs out in two seasons, and none of them want to sign new ones. If that persists there will be big problems in the future. We have 5-6 very good youngsters, and many of them have gotten quite a few matches under their belt, and will become even more important in the coming season.
