Back in the old days we had a screen in the tactics section that were titled "With Ball" and "Without Ball".

In those screens we could set the positions of every play on the pitch. The pitch was divided into 3 columns across the width of the pitch and 4 rows down the length of the pitch. We were able to set the positions of every player in all 12 of those areas, for when we had the ball and for when we didn't.

This allowed for pretty precise tactical setups, as you can imagine. It was especially handy for people using 3 at the back with no wing backs. You could set the positioning of your centre backs to cover the lack of width, while always keeping two of them central.

It was also silly, in that you could position your striker to sit on top of the opposition goalie in every block on the pitch and then it'd be up to him to try and stay onside.

All those people who think I want difficulty levels to make the game easier should re-read my posts (and the topic header for that matter)

I want to cut in and say in order to make this game performance fair enough, we need absolute realism from every part of the game, and I think that's what SI are endeavoring to achieve. But now I see discordant and unprofessional trend on this forum after so many years playing CM/FM series, like the difficulty level and other things.
I really don't understand how difficulty levels are connected to realism.. You are obviously thinking about artificial advantages for the AI manager being unrealistic. Well, how about the huge and vastly unrealistic advantage the human player has because he has a BRAIN! The AI managers are run by a computer and the human manager by a human brain. Talk about having an advantage! All this talk about difficulty levels being unrealistic is nothing short of being ridiculous. I am talking about offsetting the human advantage by giving the AI an advantage of itself. The big picture would be a more challenging and more realistic experience (unrealistic feature + unrealistic feature = realistic experience)

Of course, I'd rather see the AI becoming a lot smarter instead, but that is simply not going to happen. It has been many years since the first version of CM came out and still the AI cannot handle the transfer market very well, let alone actual tactics on the pitch. To me that is unrealistic and I want to be able to do something to offset that.

The way that I had envisage the difficulty levels working is that you start your game with one difficulty setting and then you don’t get to change it at all in the game. Disable the player search screen? What the F@ck good will that do, I don’t use it.

Well after all my ranting and raving yesterday about it being too easy I went on a 5 game losing streak last night it was glorious. I actually had to come off auto pilot and try to sort the team out. Which I did and we won our last two games. However even with this loosing streak I still think the game should be made tougher, I really do feel that it is inevitable that I will get promoted rather than go the other way.

Much as I think that difficulty levels are a necessary evil I have got to say the SI are very much against it and it just aint going to happen. So expect nothing more than more than a tweak for patch 6.03.

I understand that. I don't need to re-read the header or your posts. I simply disagree that 6.0.2 is easier. My disagreement is based purely on my own observation. However, your suggestions about offsetting the human advantage are perfectly acceptable to me. It's like in Civ3: the AI can't possible hope to compete, so at emperor levels and higher, it simply cheats. I understand the complexities of AI design. I'm a computer science student. AI research is one of my majors.

Difficulty levels are not LLM, and thankfully they're not SI either.

Look at it this way. If CM/FM was too easy prior to v6.0.2 why did people find it so necessary to use editors, super-tactics and ask for training tips?

SI have done a good job of making FM difficult in the Conference Leagues and easy in the EPL, there's no need for difficulty levels, Maesrto Vaughan has alluded to why it's not going to be programmed into FM...live with it.

Now, this discussion has nothing to do with LLM, it's a GQ one, take it there.

Anyone has a problem with that. E-mail me.
