Alright, some of you will remember by "New Dawn, New Hope" campaign in which I had begun to wish I hadn't jumped ship - well, I retired it after 21 seasons, the majority of which I couldn't be bothered to update. There were some good seasons, but I hated that I hadn't stuck with my original club longer.
On that note, I started anew selecting England and Italy and ran Frank ragged until one of the countries came up (England).
I was appointed to Alfreton Town - a squad not as dire as others but clearly in the red and loaded with a useless collection of never-will-be's.
04/05 saw my usual house-cleaning (I favor anybody that can play more than 60 minutes in a match) punctuated only by my inability to loan anyone my scout recommended. I sold a few to clear the books a bit, bought no one and went about modifying (one click at a time is the way) my tactic. As I was tasked to rebuild the squad, my eventual 7th place finish was considered great although I was dissappointed to finish out of the playoffs.
In the FA cup, I managed two wins in the qualifiers which meant some miniscule (although for me it was a shot in the arm) money before going out to the first squad that had actual players.
End of season: a good finish, a promising squad and deeply in the red having inherited wages somewhat above my budget.
05/06 - my one and only scout returned many good prospects last season and, although I still had no money for transfers, I was able to pick up several players released by the powerhouses of England (OK, released by the clubs around me but in the long run, anyone was an improvement).
Luck was with me and my scout as he found me one player who had an immediate positive impact. A couple of loans as well meant I had a great season - won the ECN and the FA Trophy (a great penalty shootout) and, quite inexplicably, found myself promoted. The reveue meant we finished in the black for the season, but were still a bit below even overall.
The great thing was, my scout (a man of no renown) had actually uncovered two players of quality - I was as surprised as anyone as usually I spend money on crap that never pays out.
Alfreton, it turns out, is not so bad anyway. Maybe a bit easy in the long run.
06/07 opened with my first transfer budget (11k) which I augmented by selling one of the players talked about above. This enabled me to bolster the defence and two key loans filled in holes in what is becomming a pretty good team.
I celebrated my promotion by deciding I had earned the right to hire two coaches and another scout - great things were afoot.
A poor September gave way to a winning streak against the relegation battlers although being knocked out in the FA cup second round and trophy third round was dissapointing. My squad tactics required almost constant adjustment over the season and by the end I had about 15 'preset' tweaks depending on the situation. This resulted in a lot of draws and enough wins to finish runner-up in conference, although a playoff final thrashing to Burton ensured we'll be back in our old place next season.
Maybe it's the best luck I've had, but the scouting seems much better - players that are recommended as having an immediate impact are, but crap is still crap. As this is only my second career with the latest patch, I'm not ready to decide if this is part of a larger improvement, but it certainly seems better.
Happily my manager reputation, by the way, has skyrocketed to 'local' - this offseason I hope it will help attract a player I've had my eye on. He rejected me in 05, but now he's mine (I hope).
Hope these updates are up to LLM quality control standards although really I do this just to up my post count.
