Apparently it doesn't have to work. (See Bolton, Blackburn.)

Seriously though, the local council won't let Gillinghams capacity go above 10'600 due to local residents. Priestfield is hemmed in by houses on all sides and the club have been looking to relocate for the past 5 years. The away end has been a temporary stand for the past 3 years.

Ian - as you've been to Central Park, maybe you can answer this. I've had the same issues at Cowden with the local council refusing to expand. One expansion went through to up the capacity to about 6600...but they won't go higher (even though the board ok's it).
If I'm not mistaken their ground is a big race track...so wouldn't it be reasonable to see a larger stadium on that ground?

| As I understand (which is not saying much, granted) the Cowden ownership are really into their racing. The ground is funny looking with the stands set outside the racing oval innit? But I wonder if they would want to take out the racing to expand the ground for footie? There does seem to be room, but I guess they wouldn't want to wreck things for the race fans.

| Bastards! They'd rather watch a bunch of left turns than a cup tie against Roma? The blood pudding must be going to their heads!!! |

I think here it's the Fried Chicken and cornbread doing the same job as the blood pudding |

| Unless they've recently brought it in, it's not. We don't have undersoil heating and were in the Premiership from 1999-2001.

As far as I know the only requirement now is that all stadia have to be all seater within 3 years of promotion to the Championship. That was Gills issue regarding the stadium and hence why we have a temporary stand at one end of the ground.

| Nobody told SI apparently. My board have just announced a 3,000 seat upgrade - after 2 years of farting around. Will take us to about 15k I think.
