This isn't true at all. The AI does adjust the way it plays depending on how it sees you but it's a gradual, continuous process and certainly doesn't happen at two set points during the season.
How it works is this. When you first start a new game you're seen as a new manager, you have a low reputation and the AI managers won't think much of you. If you start off doing well they'll start thinking 'hold on, he's actually quite good'. They'll then start to approach games against you differently, see you as more of a threat, and change their tactics accordingly. When you see this start to happen you need to tweak your tactics to stop it:
If you were playing an attacking style and it was working teams will look to defend more against you and hit you on the break. You may need to sit back a bit and play for a more patiant build up. If you were having success playing defensively teams will look to counter this in some way, by either being even more attacking against you or by keeping the ball and trying to slowely break you down.
