What causes pshop to lose the prefs you have set? I have a few custom brushes, etc that I have made, will work a file, save it, then exit pshop. Usually when you open pshop back up the same colors you used before are there and your brushes, etc. Sometimes when I open pshop it is like the prefs have been reset, the default colors are there and my brushes are back to the original settingsand my custom brushes are gone. Is this just a buggy thing that pshop does? Resetting the prefs is no big deal I guess I am just wondering why this happens. [oops]

I never experienced this Linda, but I did do some research on then internet. In this case I assume that you have Windows, but most solutions could work for MAC also (using other tools).

a) make sure that your preference file is not read-only
b) check your disk; run a scandisk (right click on drive/properties/tools)
c) on windows 2000/XP it might be possible that your file or the locations of your file has the wrong user permissions.

A short quote from a newsgroup article;

"The odds are you have your main startup drive permissions set to read only so that Photoshop is unable to actually save the preferences. check the OS X site at Apple for a thing called permissions fixer (or something like that). Some recent software installers are re-setting the permissions to read only without warning the user."

This is all what I can come up with at the moment.

Good luck

Thanks G-Man was a permission thing. Fixed now. What is a good memory setting for pshop? I have bought a new cpu and such and rebult the box and want to make sure I have the memory set where it should be. I have 768mb of ram. Right now I gave pshop 50% of the memory. My windows swap file is 320mb on the D partition where pshop is installed, and my scratch disk is on the F drive (different drive from where pshop is installed). Pshop is installed on a fat32 partition and the scratch disk is on a ntfs drive. Running W2K.

I never really looked into that. I use 510 MB on winXP machine and a scratch disk of 1GB on a partition on my second drive with 50% allocated to Photoshop and I never ran into any problems, but then again most of my files aren't all that big.
Anyways, I searched for some articles about this subject, so hopefully these might give you the necessary information Linda.
