The [official?] FM07 make me a better manager thread!
A lot of threads start on small and idle points so hopefully we can contain them in one thread. Also newbies and those having problems could use this to find answers to the problems they may be having.
Ok heres the idea. You put down a question or an assumption you have on the tactical aspect of the game. If you read a question and think you can answer it or read an assumptive statement and believe you can correct it, please give your ideas.
Some ground rules and ideas to keep the thread tidy:
1. Questions on tactics only so not to crowd the thread.
2. Ask questions in as much detail and as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings.
3. Please quote questions/answers you are responding to so to avoid confusion over who is answering whom.
I hope it's not to bold to start this. If it goes well I hope this coul be some sort of effective FAQ thread on tactics with multiple ideas to answer questions and show the variety of ideas around. If it don't work the thread can die quietly
I'll get the ball rolling:
- How do you counter teams with no particular style of play and mixed tempo/passing (according to the scout report) if playing like Cleon does in Sheff Utd project? I haven't really got a clear idea or definite rule as how to counter this.
- How do you (ie YOU personally) play with 3 at the back?

when you say 3 at the back do you mean with wingbacks if you do or dont i tend to put the middle cb with a barrow and a slightly lower mentality however all 3 have defnsive mentalitys and closing down on rarely so they dont get dragged out of position with ofcourse litlle cf and quite a direct passing stlye on those 3 i also play a dm with full closing down and a lowish mentality

This is the only 3 man defensive I've had any success with. I've tried to make it as 4-4-2 like as I could but I simply can't make it work without using a defensive midfielder. I still find my team rather prone to mistakes no matter how good the quality of the defensive unit is (I keep all the 4 defensive players extremely defensive mentality). I can beat poor teams extremely easy with it, but any half decent side picks huge holes in it. I've got the tactic for download in this thread if you want to have a look at some of the settings in it.

I'd love to find someone who can do it without wingbacks, but with wingbacks is also good.
Another question, to keep em going and because I'm simply full of them, do people use opposition instructions and really find them of any significant use? Say why/why not.

IMO, oppo instructions are only effective when used sparingly. I feel just setting closing down often in team instructions is more effective than closing down individual players, for example.
The instructions that work best for me are; show onto weak foot and hard tackling.

I agree about the opposition instructions, the only one I ever actually use is also the show onto weak foot on the opponents strikers and wingers.

I use tight marking against oppositions who play a single striker up front. I remember reading somewhere that's its best to have either tight marking or closing down checked, but not both at the same time. Any info on that would be much appreciated.
I've occasionally tried setting hard tacking and closing down often to fast-paced wingers. Not really had enough experience with that either, as I think it depends on the pace stat.

Myself I usually close down their fullbacks always when facing teams I don't expect to beat simply because the are often a bit weaker on the ball than the midfielders but still are very potent with deep crosses. Also use close down always if they have a playmaker that really stands out from the rest of the team. Show onto foot - only use this against teams who are even or better than my own. as against weak teams I don't really expect to be under pressure

.
ye you shouldnt use tight marking and closing down as your already marking the opposition if you put close down on they would chase the person nearest with the ball and leave their man totally open
