It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default very promising tactic - boom - really annoying slump/capitulation

third season with fiorentina - predicted to finish 3rd and have been in the top three each year so i dont think this is anything to do with re-ranking.

i developed my own 4-3-1-2 formation for use this season for the first time

GK
RB (with farrow)
LB (with farrow)
CB
CB
MCL (Sarrow left)
MC (barrow)
MCR (sarrow right)
AMC
St
ST (targetman)

everything was going amazing - best run i have ever had not losing in twenty two games - scoring loads and conceeding very few - not lost a game in champions league either

then i hit the 28 games mark and bang - just as if the ai sussed out exactly how to beat me i didnt win for 5 straight games including losing to teams in the bottom three - i thought i would stick to the tactic as this has happend in the past and i changed tactics (which i think can make it worse)

so i stuck with it and ended up finishing 3rd but only taking 2 wins out of the last eight!!! whats going on!?

i tried subtle tweaks but nothing worked - almost as if my tactic had been 'cracked' like on previous FM's / CM's

i have noticed that this seems to be a recurring theme - especially when playing with one tactic and not switching to home and away etc

Asking for trouble if you don't have more than one tactic to use tbh.

hmm, 28 games would be in jan/feb right? That's normally when player tiredness and injuries pile up, add to that playing against the 3 (probably) most defensive teams in the league and a slump in form is possible. What width/tempo/closing down are you using?

One tactic can work, my friend just won CL and EPL using _one_ tactic and no tinkering, but it's more up to the players in that case.

another note: did you buy any players in the transfer window and/or promote youngsters? I have noticed that some players just don't fit in. Benayoun did this for me, whenever he started I couldn't buy a win, so real madrid bought him and missed out on Uefa cup qualifiers the next season

had the same squad throughout but the injuries did start piling up i was using

width - 12
tempo - 8
passing -6
closing down 12 - (but individual too)

also i know its possible to win leagues usign just one tactic
won la liga in first season with zaragoza wihtout tweaking and won french league two years in a row without tweaking

thanks for your insight timpino - do you have any tips for creating a durable 'no tweak' tactic?

if you want a no tweak tactic for both home and away then you need to keep key sliders in the middle to balance out the home/away dilemma!
like mentality, width and defensive line all on 10 for starters! its pointless going for a quick tempo too so have that on slow! the more technical your team the slower you can go!! passing the same although ive found that 1 notch b4 mixed is best and theres no point going any lower!!

closing down is up to you but if you go high closing down for your defence go low for your mid and forwards or vice-versa, low defence must have high mid and attack cd!

i'm most successful with this approach and have won every cup in one season in EPL except for charity shield! with absolutely no tweaking whatsoever!! good luck!

thanks bob - i figured the best way to create a 'no tweaker' would be to keep most things central - i find that lowering width can really help defensively but without taking too much away from the attacking side.

also what team / shape were you using?

bluenose1, I'm more of a 5-6 tactics guy these days but i'll give some of my thoughts

I would probably look at my squad and try to make up my mind about how high up the league I would most likely finish. Then I would chose tempo, passing and width acoriding to this, I would also go with a low d-line since this seems to keep more clean sheets, especially if you are a midtable or lower team. I would probably go with a 4-4-2 or a derivative there of since it's very balanced.

I would also try to balance out fwd runs in the team so that you don't have 5 on often and 3 on mixed, and finally apply 1-3 free roles (I like them) to give the opposition some headaches. I would also give a FC or MCD/DM hold up ball (fullbacks are also good options) Through balls would probably be around mixed for the team as a whole. And I would definitely leave Counter Attack off.

Bob gave some great advice and I hope you get success with your one tactic to rule them all aproach
