more or less as you say. training improves attributes including physical ones, and this improves results on the pitch. improved results on the pitch improves morale.
the default trainings are a) very general and b) not position-specific, so you can get more from your players by assigning position-specific training routines.
as for the check box thing--i think there should be SOME checkboxes for SOME things--the things that are obvious to a human but not to a computer. the explanation for how to get fullbacks to overlap using sliders exists, but gives me a headache. that's an example of something that would benefit from having a tick box.
HOWEVER--i think a tick box driven interface would be hellish. a) there would be no way to specify degree and b) if sliders interact with each other and produce contradictions which make for bad results, multiply x10000 for tick boxes.
i think something fairly close to what we have now--sliders, except supplemented by position-specific tickboxes--would be the way to go. HOWEVER, SLIDERS SHOULD GENERALLY HAVE A VISUAL REPRESENTATION ON THE 'CHALKBOARD.' for example, if you lower the d-line, you see the effect. if you shorten passing, you see smaller circles "passing radius". if you change the mentality, it alters the players' positions, quite possibly putting them outside of each others' passing radius.
i think in general that tick boxes for common football tactics that are hard to duplicate with sliders, like overlapping fullbacks, are a great idea.
i think making EVERYTHING a tick box is creating a special circle of hell, one of the lower ones, and will be much more confusing than it at first appears (the tick boxes will interact with each other!!!)
