It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Another great point. Training. How does training affect performance on match day? Does training affect morale? Does morale affect the way players train? Would training defenders in set pieces mean that they would defend corners better? Does training simply improve attributes? Example: Freddy Eastwood's finishing has gone up 2 points, thus giving him a higher percentage chance of scoring with each shot? Oh the ambiguity of it all...

I've never bothered with training to be honest, always leave it to the CPU and auto-assign the coaches.

more or less as you say. training improves attributes including physical ones, and this improves results on the pitch. improved results on the pitch improves morale.

the default trainings are a) very general and b) not position-specific, so you can get more from your players by assigning position-specific training routines.

as for the check box thing--i think there should be SOME checkboxes for SOME things--the things that are obvious to a human but not to a computer. the explanation for how to get fullbacks to overlap using sliders exists, but gives me a headache. that's an example of something that would benefit from having a tick box.

HOWEVER--i think a tick box driven interface would be hellish. a) there would be no way to specify degree and b) if sliders interact with each other and produce contradictions which make for bad results, multiply x10000 for tick boxes.

i think something fairly close to what we have now--sliders, except supplemented by position-specific tickboxes--would be the way to go. HOWEVER, SLIDERS SHOULD GENERALLY HAVE A VISUAL REPRESENTATION ON THE 'CHALKBOARD.' for example, if you lower the d-line, you see the effect. if you shorten passing, you see smaller circles "passing radius". if you change the mentality, it alters the players' positions, quite possibly putting them outside of each others' passing radius.

i think in general that tick boxes for common football tactics that are hard to duplicate with sliders, like overlapping fullbacks, are a great idea.

i think making EVERYTHING a tick box is creating a special circle of hell, one of the lower ones, and will be much more confusing than it at first appears (the tick boxes will interact with each other!!!)

Everyone has their own approach, but I think it's a good idea to scout for and assign coaches at the very least - you will get a 40% or so increase in training - if the stars are anything to be believed.

PS Chand:

CONDITIONALS are a great--and necessary--idea.

ANY football team IRL knows if they score late to take a lead to stop pressing the attack and defend, defend, defend. yet the 'quick tactics' in FM07 can take as long as TWO MINUTES gametime to take effect. i thought 'quick tactics' was the equivalent of shouting from the touchline? what have they programmed for the speed of sound, then, eh?

if i could set up conditionals for saved tactics such as IF score THEN shut up shop, which would call up my 'shut up shop' tactic, that'd be brilliant.

also i'd like to be able to save certain instructions with individual players. these would take effect whenever the player took the field and override the 'formation' instructions. for example, i have a player who is an ace at long shots, i'd want him to take 'em but the other guy who plays his position? NEVER. and i don't want to have to click the slider each time.

The funny yet sad thing about all this is how the staff is completely ignoring this thread.

This is an excellent thread. Agree with all the posts. Isn't there a way og moving it to the general discussion forum? This needs to be read by all. Especially the SI staff.

I think this is a very good thread.

Like arteta said, its the not-knowing that is frustrating.

I went away to Old Trafford with my Leeds United side and lost 1-0 to a Man United team who had won their last 8 games in a row.

I then went away to the New Den to play 20th placed Millwall, and playing the same tactics, i lost 5-2.

What seems odd to me is that i could concede only one to Man U, who have a good attack and are in form, and yet concede 5 to a very poor Millwall.

What makes people think SI aren't doing something about this for the next version, or that the hundreds of threads pointing out the inadequacies of the game haven't been noted?

Silence does not denote ignorance.
