It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

timpino,I use zonal.Explain why you use man marking for FB.Man marking is bad, because if your opposition change formation,or your play 4-4-2 and your opposition 3-5-2 your marking will confuse entirely.

so is it better to use man marking with fullbacks when both teams line up, 4-4-2 say?

Yes,but you don't know may be in the middle of the game your opposition will change to 4-3-1-2 for example that's why better use tight zonal marking for FB.That's my advice.

Set the defenders to man mark the attacking players. One option is to leave one defender on tight and the other loose.

With good defenders you should be able to use both settings anyway. If you are letting in too many goals it could be down to the formation or maybe the midfielders not covering.
