Quick clarification - Should players with better passing ratings be set to short passing or direct?

Well sometimes short passing can be a waste of talent however its up the style your team is playing.

I always have my link men on direct though

I guess that's my confusion - if a guy has great crossing and passing ratings, wouldn't he be more successful at a direct (or mixed) game since he'd be more successful in completing passes?

Well short passes tend to mean a better completion rate.

Wingers can be on direct as this meens they will always be passing forward and trying to create.
